• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Khron,

Thanks for the additional info, you have given me some homework to do.

'To a price' are probably the keywords in this example of a cheap sub. They must have saved money by not printing any info on the transformer....

Take care.

Thanks guys.

budm, AC feeding the unit is 240v. I see your point with head room in the capacitors. Best to not to squeeze that margin at all.

Khron, understanding there are deviations from ideal, is it safe to assume then that the 'rated' voltage is always a loaded one ?

From the online content I have seen trying to find a replacement the specifications are listed differently from site to site. When I started this thread, the idea I had in mind was that given a transformer with no output...

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

OK, just to wrap up. The new Thermal Fuses arrived this morning.

I have carefully soldered one back in place of the original failed piece and reset the layers of insulation all the time checking that I had maintained a circuit through the windings. I reconnected the transformer to the boards and speaker and powered it up.

All good.

For the record I measured the output of the secondary winding unloaded at 60vAC between the two yellow wires. Measuring each back to the centre white wire of the...

Thank you again everybody for your valuable insights and contributions.

My Thermal Fuses are due to arrive tomorrow so I will replace the failed one and give it a shot. I will post the result. The original is soldered in, is it possible to install the replacement in the same way if I use some sort of shunt to stop the heat from getting to the fuse ? I was thinking of using a pair of Vise-Grips, a G-Clamp or similar on the leg between the fuse and the solder point. Is that the best way to approach it ?

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

budm,

I tried the test using a 60W incandescent lamp in series. I think perhaps my connections were not solid enough but it didn't seem to work, that is the lamp did not appear to light at all.

I checked with my meter and found that I had 240v available at the Blue and Brown wires but nothing showing at the winding ends again.

I was worried that the windings had failed and was packing up the test gear when I noticed that the incandescent light globe was quite warm to the touch. So I substituted...

budm,

Apologies but I missed your post regarding the sub model. I don't know that it has a model number. It was part of the Pioneer Speaker Kit boxed up as S-HS50 that was bundled with the AV Receiver I purchased, a VSX-522.

I can only find any information on line where people tried to sell them off, nothing either from Pioneer themselves or any technical data. Here's a link...

madan1,

It is TDA7293.

Hope that helps.

Thanks budm.

Yes, so in series as:

* Blue Wire -> Lamp -> Blue Wire -> Winding End 1
* Brown Wire -> Winding End 2

and Thermal Fuse is no longer in the circuit.

Lamp on the neutral side should be OK I think. DC is my favoured current.

You are right madan1.

I couldn't see anything with my naked (failing) eye but I looked at the original pic and can make something out. I will try and get a better image to confirm.

Give me 20 minutes

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

madan1,

Please see attached pictures.

I hope they cover what you are after. There is basically one IC connected to the heat sink. I took the holding bracket off too but there was no information on that side of the IC. The board is only screen printed there as IC21.

Let me know if there is something else you would like....

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

budm,

I have a test socket that takes bayonet cap lamps but smallest I have available here is 60W. Is that going to create too much current draw for the test and potentially damage the primary side ?

I also have one of those Philips LED replacement globes for bayonet socket but it is 11W only.

Will either of these suffice ?

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Thanks so much everybody for your kind consideration.

petehall347, you were right.

This time I checked at Blue and Brown and then used an alligator clip to join the 2 legs of the fuse together. Clip off = Open, Clip on = OK.

I will order 5 of these as replacements.

Hopefully the issue doesn't go any deeper than this one problem. I was concerned too as agent24 made mention about a...

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Hey Guys,

I have opened up the transformer end cap and cut away the tape and insulation to find the thermal fuse. See photos attached.

I checked with my DMM and good news is that the fuse is definitely open. However, I checked direct onto the primary windings past where the fuse is soldered and I get an open circuit there too

The only way I get anything in range at all is to go to the 2M Ohm setting on the meter so I am pretty sure that's not right.

madan1, I will take...

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Thanks for the tip Khron.

I figured that might have been the case. 'Adventure' is my middle name so I will give it a go. Absolutely nothing to lose by trying that out.

I checked online at my local electronics outlet and they have thermal fuses at 77 and 133 degrees C. The transformer lists 105. To me that seems a little on the low side. Any opinion about moving to a higher fail temp ?

Thanks again. I will post the outcome of my 'open transformer surgery' when I have it on the operating tab...

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Thanks madan1.

The big caps are 50v 4700uF. I thought that too but at 50v it probably still leaves options of 12-0-12 to 48-0-48 so I didn't rely on that.

Yes, it sits in standby until it receives a low frequency signal and then it turns on. Feature of convenience I guess. Makes troubleshooting a bit more difficult though.

I agree with you, not a big fan of power saving. Have seen it cause many problems.

• Re: Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Thanks for getting back to me eccerr0r.

1. The dimensions of the transformer are: W80mm x H70mm x D95mm. Weight is about 2kg.

2. Photos are attached. If you need anything in more detail please let me know. I have a shot of all components for reference, power board and amplifier board.

3. It is rated at 180w with a 6.5" down firing speaker.

Thanks again....

• Pioneer Speaker Package subwoofer transformer.

Hey Guys,

I wasn't sure whether to post this in Audio or in Power Supplies.

Looking for some advice on a failed speaker package subwoofer. This Pioneer unit from a cheapo S-HS50 kit that came with my AVR dropped its lunch a while ago. I have pulled it apart and carried out some basic checks and it looks like the main transformer has failed.

I have 240VAC going in and nothing at all coming out. It has 3 wires coming out, 2 Yellow and a White at centre. I figure it is a centre tapped transformer but it has no marking or labelling on it at all that indicate...

• Re: Diamond Digital (AOC LM928 ?) x 2, Two seconds to Black

I found out that the Lead Free type should be backward compatible with solder containing some lead anyway so I have ordered the (E) type. I gather that the Lead + Halogen free type must be in a higher demand for production as quantities are higher and cost is lower. I will keep things simple........

Update:

I found some C5706's on au.mouser.com so I will arrange some from there.

They come as Lead Free (E) and Lead + Halogen free (H). Is one type better or more durable than the other ?
