Re: Average lifetime of your discrete video cards?
Great point about default cooling profiles not being aggressive enough. I imagine this is to reduce noise output, but I don't like it.
In the past I've used custom fan curves on GPUs that ran hot at stock clocks....

Re: Average lifetime of your discrete video cards?
I lost some 8400GS cards during the capacitor plague, but since then no failures.
My HD 5750 and HD 7750 are still going strong. The last gaming duty that the 5750 saw was last spring, it's since been demoted to HTPC use. For something that's not worth $30, it's pretty great.

Re: Next Generation Hardware (long term plans)?
If I were in the market for an AM3+ motherboard right now, I would take a look at the Asus 970 Pro Gaming/Aura (costs less than $100 new). 7+1 phase digital VRM and (according to Asus, anyway) better-quality capacitors. The consensus among professional reviewers and Newegg users is that it's a very good board.
MSI and the 970 chipset is not a great combination. Cheaply made and failure prone.
