    Unfortunately the laptop is completely locked - you can't do anything, not even invoke the boot menu.

    But thats the thing. It did not belong to a company. It was however bundled with all sorts of enteprise grade security bloatware that was activated by default. My client has every password ever used on this machine, including BitLocker keys etc. But the defaultuser1 account was created by Windows and for some reason, the pre boot authentication attempts to use the credentials of this account to start the machine - an account created by windows update, with a random password.

    A client has one of these laptops. She uses it as a personal machine and had left everything on defaults. These laptops come included with a slew of zero-trust based security 'enhancements'. One day, after a Windows update, somehow the Pre-Boot Authentication safeguard was triggered, and since then the laptop has been asking not for her Windows password, but for the password of the temporary profile that Windows creates during updates (defaultuser0, defaultuser1 etc.)

    Per Microsoft documentation, this is a hidden profile with a randomly generated password. And somehow, the preinstalled...

    The Winbond chip is the EC ROM (size=2048MB), I suggest flashing back the original, you could have messed up the embedded controller firmware (although if the laptop works, I guess its fine)....

    Just wanted to give a huge thanks to the OP for this utility. Successfully removed bios password from an Elitebook 820 G2.

    Bios chip is a Macronix 25L12873F which is not technically supported by flashrom, yet reading and writing both worked by using the MX25L12835F/MX25L12845E/MX25L12865E option.
