Re: AC to AC supply: Are some better than others?
^ Thanks.
Kind of what I thought, but I wanted to be sure.
I guess this kind of design exists to keep noise down, or maybe so the entire chassis can be smaller, thus slightly less expensive. Good point about short-protection on the primary, though it's hard to know if that exists when looking at these things.
FWIW, this is just an Aphex 107. They're actually pretty decent sounding if you change the op amps, and swap the 12AX7 for a good 12AT7. I figure the techs created a good design, then...

AC to AC supply: Are some better than others?
I need a ps that outputs 24vac, for a mic preamp.
The supply that came with this preamp was a cheap wallwart type, evidently just a tranny encased in plastic.
I'm wondering if I might getting better sound, or more stability or whatever, with a higher quality unit, but not sure if there even IS such a thing with an AC - to -AC supply. So... IS THERE?
For instance:

Is there such a thing as AC regulation (In a small package) ?
I've seen some supplies with a "current limiting, earth...Last edited by Cableaddict; 11-29-2017, 09:59 PM.

Bad Mobo VRM - Symptoms?
This will be a long post, but someone please, PLEASE try to answer my questions at the end. I can’t find this info anywhere:
I suspect my mobo’s vrm circuit is wonky. (details, below) However, I don’t yet have the knowledge to test it directly. REGARDLESS, I’d like to know if the following symptoms do indeed suggest a bad vrm, or if my problems likely lie elsewhere.

EVGA mATX X99 mobo, 2 years old.

Re: Computer fan noise and maintenance
I've thought about it, but figure the powder might not stay for ong.
I've used Tri-Flow a few times, and so far it seems to work great. It bonds to metal surfaces, so won't fly off like powder might, it's super-light, and it doesn't attract dust.
The problem with a noisy fan is getting the dirt / dust OUT, first. I dunno what's best, though I've used WD40....Last edited by Cableaddict; 11-25-2016, 05:50 AM.

Re: Your favorite “quick-fix” fastening materials
"GOOP" brand glue.
I love it so much I wish I could marry it.
Sticks to EVERYTHING, including most plastics.
Fills in voids.
Doesn't shrink much. (if at all)
Waterproof.
Holds better than JB Weld, and doesn't get brittle like most epoxies.
Lasts "forever," unlike Ca glue.
Usually comes off quite easily with some heat & minor effort, even after years of use.
The only downside it that it's hard to sand or file, unless it has...Last edited by Cableaddict; 11-25-2016, 05:30 AM.

Re: Dumbest 'electronic' mistake you ever made
My dumbest mistake is probably the prize-winner:
I once rebuilt a mid-level recording console, with lots of custom circuitry, and a completely new, discrete summing amp section.
As I wanted my hard work to last for years, and not corrode, I washed all solder joints with Cramolin red, let it dry, then sprayed over them with a phenolic plastic spray (specifically designed for such things.
What I didn't know at the time was that Cramolin red is electrically conductive. ( ! ) - And it has a...

Re: Contact cleaner for PCB use?
I'm a huge fan of Cramolin.
The red stuff destroys oxidation like nothing else. - However, one must be careful as it's also mildly corrosive, and (as I found out the hard / expensive way) electrically conductive!
So, you need to clean it off very carefully after use. (flux cleaner works fine)
