Asus U47A Laptop - Power Supply Shorts Out + Smoking Component
Got a laptop in with an odd power issue. When the power supply is plugged in the green indicator light on the power supply goes out. Tried a new power supply which does the same thing. Removed the motherboard to check for power jack or component damage and found nothing, but when I plugged the power in I found little wisps of smoke coming from one of the components. Tested the resistance on the component which read 1.1 Ohms one way and .7 Ohms reversed. Any ideas?

Re: Bad Cap on Networking Equipment (AXEL PLatine Terminal AX3000/M65E)
Alright it's not the diode. With the board removed and the CR3 diode desoldered they all read the same at .176v. That diode only gives me a reading in the opposite direction when the board it's on is plugged into the bigger board.

Re: Bad Cap on Networking Equipment (AXEL PLatine Terminal AX3000/M65E)
Alright so I replaced the broken cap and another that was slightly cracked at the base (just incase). Here is the part I used. Unfortunately nothing has changed as you guys predicted. It still only powers on when shorting the capacitor, which I now realize is the same as shorting out the power to the ground. Why would that work? I can short the right side power input directly to the...

Re: Bad Cap on Networking Equipment (AXEL PLatine Terminal AX3000/M65E)
You're definitely right about it being connected to the ground and input, but for whatever reason it does seem to be the reason the unit won't power. Shorting out the leads on the capacitor allows the unit to power up fine. I've got a replacement on the way and I'll take some pics of the boards when I do the repair....

Bad Cap on Networking Equipment (AXEL PLatine Terminal AX3000/M65E)
So I've got a random piece of networking equipment from a restaurant POS system, won't power up at all. Popped it open and found a ceramic capacitor that was physically broken. I've never messed with this type of capacitor before so I'm not entirely sure how to find a replacement. It's a little yellow capacitor and I think the writing on it says "4n7". Should I be able to replace this with mostly any other 4700pF capacitor?

Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off
Any recommendations on where to get a replacement? The closest I can find are these off of eBay, which are supposed to be for a 24" screen but are only 500mm (19.7in) long. The ones in this screen are right about 21" long.Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off

Re: Inverter tester using old CFL
I just used this trick to great success and wanted to say that I came up with an easy way to separate the plastic housing on the base of the bulb. I didn't have a hacksaw handy so I put the lower half of the bulb in a vise and tightened it slowly, crushing the lower housing causing the upper part to pop free. I suppose there might be a chance of shattering the bulb this way, but both the ones I did this too popped free easily without having to apply too much pressure.Last edited by PohTayToez; 10-07-2013, 01:42 PM.

Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off
Alright, I rigged up a couple of 14W test bulbs and they both stayed lit so I guess I'm looking at at least one bad bulb in the monitor. Thanks a lot guys!
EDIT: So one things has me scratching my head. I hooked up one of the screens CCFLs at a time along with a test lamp and determined which bulb wasn't working. But in both configurations my test bulb stayed lit, where as I would have expected to shut off after a second or two when hooked up along with the bad bulb.Last edited by PohTayToez; 10-07-2013, 01:58 PM.

Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off
Currently looking for a datasheet on it, it's part number 1J.26049.161
There are six pins on one side and four on the other, but two of the pins on the side with four are not connected. Anyway to tell which are the secondaries just be looking?

Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off
I've never tested MOSFETs before but I found this guide saying how:
https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpost.php?p=203724&postcount=19
So I tested the resistance between the pins and didn't find any shorts, everything was at least a few kiloohms.
Oh at the part number on them is A2790 and "930" on the second line.Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off...count=19

Re: Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off
If a bulb is bad would it be visibly noticeable? For the split second it turns on it looks like both bulbs are working fine (i.e. not dim on one side)

Dell ST2410b Backlight Shuts Off
Hey I've got a 24" Dell LCD. When it first gets video input the backlight will work for about one second before turning off. None of the caps were visibly bad but I went ahead and replaced all of them except the big one. Unfortunately it's doing the exact same thing still. Any ideas?

Panasonic TC-P50G10 Plasma No Picture, Red Indicator Only
This plasma TV shows no activity other than the red indicator light that comes on when you press power. If you hold power down for a few seconds then the light will go off.
I've tried all the fuses on the power board and they test good. I've yet to find any other fuses other than a couple on the buffer boards that tested good.
I've tried disconnecting the buffer boards and shorting SC50 as described in this post. which did not result in a blink error.
The only thing that...

Re: LG RU-42PZ71, No Power
Any suggestions? I've never had one that just didn't output anything from the PSU, I'm not sure what else I could test.

Re: HP wireless module problem
Because they don't want you using non-HP provided hardware. It's stupid, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to use any wireless card or none at all, but they make you have the right one or it won't boot at all.

LG RU-42PZ71, No Power
TV won't turn on at all, no status light or anything. This TV has a mechanical switch but it seems to work good, I'm getting a 110V reading on the first fuse. But all of the outputs on the power board come up at zero volts.
I've checked the fuse on the power board, two on the Y-sustain (one glass, one surface mount), and three on the Z-sustain (two ceramic on surface mount). All seem good, and I haven't found any other fuses. I'm not sure what I could test now, but is it safe to say the problem is with the power board?
