  • Re: Need power supply recommendations for older P2/P3 gaming system

Sorry, folks...didn't mean to start a mean-tempered conversation (You can shoot me for the pun)

Thanks for all the input. I will be looking for a PSU that does provide the -5 rail and is compliant with the older specs. As far as drives: I may be swapping this mobo out for a recapped BE6 in the future and adding a sata adapter. I use old IDE drives for backups and I might also be using this station for a HDD tester so that's 2 ide's of various speeds, the OS drive (7200rpm) and a sata drive via pci...

  • Re: 2 PSu's suspected of killing stuff (LP-6100D and FSP300-60BTV)

Thanks for the responses! I might have a try at doing some repair on both of these if i can get some bench space.

Both psu's do work, but they may have gone overvoltage or overcurrent. I had components die with both of them. Still trying to figure out what that component with the cracked heatshrink tubing around it is, I'm waiting untill
I can tear it down before i peel the tubing off.

Can anyone recommend a decent PSU tester?

  • Re: Intel SE440BX-2, Known to have bad caps?

Well, thats 3 power supplies on 2 of these boards that have now gone unusable.

Started getting random reboots with the LIC B350ATX. Smelled electronics cooking inside and riped it out for my last good PSU. A Xeon something-or-other. Opened the LIC and nothing looks bad, but the smell still persists.

I'm starting to think it was a combination of the old dvd-rom and the chinton 3.5" floppy that killed the last 3 PSU's/ video cards/harddrives. Mind you, they still work. The only differance now is with...

  • Re: Intel SE440BX-2, Known to have bad caps?

Pulled the board out for another look today and to take some pics. Might've found my prolbem (Thanks ChaosLegionnaire!) as when i first checked for the power prolbem I didn't remove the floppy drive. It minimized it, i replaced the FD with another one from the parts bin, and it seems to have reduced the prolbem.

This board seems a bit odd in that the electro's only number about 7. Other 440bx boards number 10 or more. Most of what would be electro's have been replaced with the tiny metal can ones (dont know their proper...

  • 2 PSu's suspected of killing stuff (LP-6100D and FSP300-60BTV)

New here, figured I'd post some pics of 2 power supplies that worked great for years, put into storage as known good, then pulled out and might have helped kill a video card (S3 virge) and 2 hard drives (deathstar 80g and maxtor 40g)

I'm decent with electronics, but havent touched any in years and my soldering skills arn't the best. Was looking to do some practive and try and refresh these guys.

Interesting tidbit: I got both of these from a PC graveyard. Yes, a grave yard. They were in pc's that had been stored outside for years on 1/4 acre of land. As i was broke,...

  • Need power supply recommendations for older P2/P3 gaming system

I've run out of known good PSU's for my current build, as 2 of them are suspected of damaging video cards. (I'll make a separate post with pictures for them)

My question is, for the following system, what are my options for buying new? Ive spent many hours recently looking for a new ATX v1.xx psu that has the -5 rail and isn't proprietary. The system will host the devices listed below, should be run 24x7 (Though i expect 2x a year or more to turn it off and on to swap drives in and out as well as to clean the dust out)

I'm currently using an LIC LC-350W power supply,...

    Thanks for your reply!

Well, I pulled everything from the board, disconnected everything but the video card, and did both hard and soft reboots.

Turns out i was wrong...getting the same microsecond fan slowdown/ voltage drop during a soft reset too (ctrl+alt+del).

This is unique to this board alone, ive never seen this happen on other boards (and I've replaced/upgraded over 40 motherboards from 1996 to now)

Any ideas? There should be enough reserve capacity in both the power...

  • Intel SE440BX-2, Known to have bad caps?

Hi. New user here - Have decent working knoledge of computers and electronics, trying to build a old-school win98 machine.

Bought a used 440bx-2 motherboard from ebay a year ago. Board arrived in working condition, no obvious damage or caps vented/residue on mobo. Went back to it recently and started to build system.

Had 2 hard drives die (One was a deathstar so i didn't make the connection when it gave up the ghost) The second was a venerable old 40g Maxtor. These drives require an act of god to kill. Even after its "death" it came back after a few days....
