Re: Why I love Japanese CRT sets (especially the older ones)
Not ancient but I use a 1992 model Panasonic Superflat tube (not a Gaoo but a very nice set) in my workshop. It still has a great picture. I put it together from 2 or 3 sets, one of which was fairly new when the power supply was taken out by lightning. Had another one that was run 24-7 for a few years and the CRT was completely worn out which I took the power supply out of . Have had to re-cap the vertical cct (very common on these) and re-solder a few other areas but it looks good for an 18 year old set! IMO after those...

Re: LG 42" Plasma Colored Vertical Lines and No Video, No Menus
I replaced the Ysus on the one I was working on too and no change. I don't think it's Y-sus related. With Ysus faults I think you would get horizontal lines, not vertical ones.
I did some playing with this one as I really had nothing to lose and when I disconnected some of the ribbon cables on the lower side, I got corresponding vertical blank spots.
I was always thinking of it in terms of CRT sets where your horizontal deflection would cause side problems and vertical deflection would cause mostly...

Re: LG 42" Plasma Colored Vertical Lines and No Video, No Menus
Any new progress? I have been working on a LG RU42PX11 (PDP42V6 panel) on and off over the summer. I too am a former TV tech with no plasma experience. I am finding the process of troubleshooting not only frustratingly slow but also not very precise. Perhaps with experience one would get good at diagnosing faults but as for me I will not EVER tell anyone I'll look at their plasma TV again! I did tell them when I started that I could not make them any promises as I had very limited knowledge.
Anyway,...

Re: Samsung HL-R4664W DLP - opinions requested
I realize that it's the manufacturer's fault in a lot of this but it still bugs me that all this stuff gets tossed. The manufacturer should be made to either produce a set that will last and if they don't they should be made to take it back and recycle it properly.
Just my little rant. If I do decide to fix it, I might just put it in a place where it doesn't get much use.

Re: Samsung HL-R4664W DLP - opinions requested
The only reason I took it is to try and keep it out of the landfill if even just for a little while. My TV needs are currently met........well I have too many as it is but I hate to see a set that is only 5 years old go for trash just because it needs $125 in parts and isn't "skinny" enough. I might just fix it and give it to the in laws. This world is screwed because of attitudes like that.
Edit: No offense Plainbill, I'm sure your sets are great and you are doing your part to keep 'em out...Last edited by Innov8tive1; 09-02-2010, 03:43 PM.

Samsung HL-R4664W DLP - opinions requested
Someone has given me a HL-R4664W that apparently has color wheel issues. I have not picked it up yet to confirm the diagnosis but assuming that is all that is wrong with it, it would seem to be a reasonably easy fix. I have 15 years experience with CRT sets but virtually none with any of the newer technologies. Does anyone have some experience or tips to share about color wheel replacement, this set and it's value and if it is worth me putting any money in to a 5 year old DLP? Also where would be a good place to start looking for parts?
Thanks

Re: My point of view...
I had about 14 years of consumer electronic repair under my belt. When I started the vast majority was VCR, CRT tvs were a close second then came audio and all the other smaller stuff. I was growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of manuals, difficulty finding parts, complexity of circuits, surface mount components etc. and a boss breathing down my neck making sure that I was "making him money" every hour he paid me for. I changed careers in 2006, just when the first generation plasma/lcd sets were dying. I now fix office equipment, larger...

Re: Hitachi PT61HX40B odd problem
Have you tried the new STKs with the old digital video module? Just to rule out one or the other. Process of elimination. Definitely check to verify all voltages are present.
I don't have a schematic for that set but is there a video muting circuit? I know some sets will blank the video if there is some other problem to prevent damaging the CRTs.
Maybe try the STKs one at a time to see if maybe one of them is shorted.

Re: Hitachi PT61HX40B odd problem
Are the STKs the EXACT part number you pulled? I'm assuming that other than bad convergence the set worked ok before changing anything.

Re: Same board used in multiple sets
Ok, that is more or less what I thought. I found one that has the same number on the white tag so I am hoping that all is good when I put it in. We'll see when it gets here.
Thank you

Same board used in multiple sets
My question is regarding boards which have the same part number but is used in many different plasma sets. The board in question is the control (I think otherwise known as the video board or controller board or LVDS) board from a LG RU42PX11 plasma set. The board has been confirmed to be bad and I find a lot of replacements on ebay. What I need to know is if there is any difference from one manufacturer to another with regard to this board. Like will one from a Hitachi or Akai set work properly in the LG, is there any proprietary software etc. that might be different in the LG?
Edit:...

Re: Samsung HCP4241W
Thanks for the info. I will check all you have mentioned. From a servicability standpoint, I like the way it is laid out, we'll see how the rest of this goes.

Samsung HCP4241W
This is a rear projection TV. I have replaced the convergence ICs and DCU and I now need to re-align the convergence.
Does anyone have the method of getting into the service menu and re-aligning and storing the data?
Thanks

Re: ANOTHER 32" Trinitron...is it worth it?
Thanks for that link, I have wanted to get one for use at home but could not justify the price. Although I might be able to get the one from the shop I used to work at as since I left they farm everything out and I still do the occasional repair for them.

Re: RCA CRT TV Flyback?
I hear ya on the programming..........give me a dozen.......or even a half dozen good channels and scrap the other 500!
I grew up in the 70's and 80's but we only had a B&W TV until about 1983 or so. Didn't matter, all we got was one channel anyway. It was an old tube set, I remember having to go and warm it up during supper so we could watch Disney on Sunday evening. A former boss of mine trained on tubes in the early 60's with a mail order course. He still has a case of old tubes and a tube tester around somewhere. How things have changed!

Re: RCA CRT TV Flyback?
You may be right about that but there used to be TV/stereo shops all over and now you have to take or send anything to a big city to get it worked on. There are still some guys (myself included to some degree) who still do a bit of it but it seems that many of us have not kept up with any of the newer technologies. I realize it is possible to do surface mount without all the hot air tools etc. as I have done some, the first being a processor IC for the display on my old Technics SA-R377 back when I was still in college and had good eyes. It wasn't pretty...

Re: RCA CRT TV Flyback?
I definitely agree with what you are saying here. TVs have gotten VERY complicated and aside from a few with "common" problems, they are much harder to troubleshoot..........and forget about tracing a circuit with multi-layered boards.......even if you could trace a circuit, you can't even de-solder or re-solder an IC without some very expensive equipment and a whole lotta luck!!...
