• Re: Issue with USB 3 or Win10 or both?

I had wondered about a bug in the software (the Nirsoft utility works perfectly, the software that uses the device has the issue).

I've done some research on how the software detects the USB device but with my limited programming experience there's not much I can tell if it's right for USB 3 detection of not. I've included the flow of calls the best I can below if that helps anyone identify a software issue for USB 3.

Software flow of calls to get and enumerate the USB device:

No malware as far as we know. Antivirus was disabled and still the same issue.

The device is detected and installed by Win10 and shows no errors in device manager but the software that uses the device cannot see it. Does this mean the device might still might not be compatible with USB 3?

I've asked him to check whether the chipset drivers are up to date. No response on that one but I don't think he has issues with any other USB devices on the laptop.

• Issue with USB 3 or Win10 or both?

This problem is not mine, I've basically been trying to give 10,000 mile tech support to a person and I'm just about out of ideas. I'm not a member of any other forum so I'm hoping that someone here might be familiar with this type of issue and be able give me some fresh ideas for him to try or point me to a good place to ask.

In a nutshell, this person has a USB device. On his desktop running Win10 the device is detected and installs correctly and the software for the device can see it and use it.

On his laptop (also running Win10) however things are different. Using...

• Re: MSI K8 Neo4

The motherboard is powering along ok without the SMD cap in place. I can't say if it's as good as it ever was when it had it but it's stable right now. I am being careful of how much stress I put on the system though, and what I turn on and off that on the same power circuit as the system.

From the circuit I posted back in message 22, The cap is apparently 10UF. Because there are no real obstructions in that area I'm probably going to try and find a leaded ceramic 10U cap to replace it (if it's worth doing that); with part of the pad gone...

I wouldn't go that far but thank you for the comment.

I found a schematic for the 7125 board. It's not the same revision number as mine but I did find C11 in it, which is 10U. I've attached that part of the schematic.

I removed that now blown smd cap. No holes in the mobo but part of one pad on the board for it is gone by the looks of things. An axial lead cap could probably be put back in it's place with some very good soldering. Not sure about another smd.

Now for what I hope is the good news, after removing...

Gents, I must apologise, I am such a tool this week I was reading mV and not even realising it.

So to recap with correct values, with the ATX12 4 pin plug connected to the board nothing worked; no life from the CPU and the PSU would not turn on, (ps-on pin would go down to about 14 mV when shorted to GND, not go up to 14V as I had said).

When measuring the FET's as instructed by ChaosLeginonnaire I would get a reading of 2.8mV, not 2.8V so the PSU still wouldn't turn on.

Now we get the interesting part for...

Thanks.

Each of those 6 fets measured 2.8v, without the PSU even being on. I know the PSU I'm using is not very good at all but even I know that can't be a good sign.

It really looks like the board is trashed, and with 2.8v on those fets I guess the CPU would have been trashed as well.

I should be getting a new PSU this week for my new build (probably Corsair RM750X if I can find one). Any danger of damaging the new PSU by hooking it up to the K8 board? With a new good PSU I'll try getting measurements again.

hmm, I not exactly sure where to measure vcore from. I'm still very new to this side of things. I did read the measuring vrm thread but that didn't penetrate the skull too well.

I've attached a pic of the vrm area of the K8 board. From what I understand after stepping down through the mosfets there I would find vcore somewhere.

I did try measuring but I've most likely done it all wrong. With the ps-on pin shorted to ground all I got trying to measure the first fet closest to the 4 pin plug was about 3.2mV.

I have decided...

Yes, I can test the PSU. Everything looks in range, except for the strange behavior of the -12v line. I've posted the results in my PSU thread.

• Re: UsiCase 330U-SCE

At the request of another on my mobo thread I measured the PSU again.

PSU in standby:

12v = 0.4v (remaining bad cap in PSU?)
5v = 0v
3.3v = 0v
-5v = 0v
-12v = 15.1v **
5vsb = 5.19v

No load
12v = 12.06v
5v = 5.26v
3.3v = 3.429v
-5v = -4.94v
-12v = -11.39v
5vsb = 5.19v

2 HDD load
12v = 12.06v
5v = 5.26v
3.3v = 3.429v
-5v = -4.94v
-12v = -11.7v
5vsb = 5.19v

This shows something...

• UsiCase 330U-SCE

I made a post about my now apparently dead MSI K8 Neo4 motherboard and it was suggested to me that I post about the PSU here first with some pictures.

Basically, I turned on the PC and logged on, left the room, came back a few minutes later and the PC was dead. The system had been stable without any hint of what was coming.

The PSU in question is a Usicase 330U-SCE.

I opened the PSU up and found one cap with a bulged top. I noticed another one tonight starting to bulge (very slight). I can see no scorch or burn marks anywhere.

The caps...

• MSI K8 Neo4

Earlier this week my pc died and I'm a bit lost in my diagnosis of the fault. Hopefully someone will read all this long post and can give me some advice.

The board is a MSI K8 Neo4 Platnium (MS-7125) and it has served me very well since I got it second hand. I do want to build a new pc but I'd like to do that gradually so I can research hardware more carefully so I'd like it if the K8 could serve me a bit longer.

As I'm a bit lost I'm wondering if bad caps could be the problem or if something else has gone bad. I've done lot's of googling and reading these forums...

• Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

New to these forums but not to badcaps.net.

Have tried a re-capping before, which did not go so well. Am stuck with the diagnosis of my latest failed board and need a higher level of assistance so have signed up.

I do like to find out how things work (will take anything apart, back together is a different story) or why they are not working but component level is definetely not my forte.
