I'm brand new here. Great site.

So, someone was throwing out a much nicer monitor than the one I'm using, a hannspree hsg1064. He didn't know what was wrong, so I plugged in and found that the screen appeared normally for about 5 seconds, then went black. Searching for this symptom lead me here, and to your very helpful FAQ on the subject.

I don't have a multimeter (yet) so I figured I'd check the lamps. See the pictures below and you can see what I found
