• Re: No power on a Acer AL1916

I happened to be next to radio shack so I stopped in and I replaced the 1000uF 25V and 1000uF 16V both with 1000uF 35V caps from XICON. However, other than a tiny clicking sound when the power is on (something might be shorting) the problem is the same.

Pushing the power button the power LED turns on green (and stays green) and the screen backlight turns on. However, there is no image, logo, menu, etc.

It would still be nice if I could save this LCD.

Since you had RobertoIsRad go through these steps I just followed along and I already posted these readings.

Thanks for the help you have been, I'm having a lot of fun with this. ...

A photo of the logic board is in my last post. I tried to take another picture but my camera is out of batteries so I'm charging it now. Let me know and I'll take a photo if needed.

• Re: No power on a Acer AL1916

Today I got a fluke 87 from a friend and found that the capacitance setting only goes to 5uF. I tried checking for a short on any of the caps using ohm and they seemed fine.

Anyway, I followed each step here and these are my results:
Power Board #1 Large Capacitor - 166 volts
Black - 0.012
Brown - 4.49
Red - 14.52
Orange -0.00
Yellow - 4.93
Green - 4.93
Blue - 0.00
Black - 0.00

Logic Board: (S/N: 715G1558-1-ac)
Left - 3.28...

• Re: The Bad Capacitor FAQ

It would be nice to see some information also included about testing for caps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4tnHA0phcc&feature=relatedRe: The Bad Capacitor FAQ<br /> <br...=related

• Re: Recommend me a MultiMeter

The Uni-Trend UT61E does look nice - but there is no way I can afford $70 just to test a couple caps. I really need the bare minimum just to get this LCD fixed. The problem is that I don't know what the bare minimum is. I get the feeling that like just about everything else - the cheap stuff works enough to get the/a job done - but no one likes to use it and it doesn't last long - which is fine for me.

When I build computers I can always choose a cheap $20 ECS mobo that just barely...

• Re: Recommend me a MultiMeter

I also am looking for a cheap multimeter (and esr meter too I guess) to help me test my LCD that died. I don't plan on making a hobby out of this unless my other boards start dieing also.... oh great....

With that in mind does anyone second the mention that the 14213+TE would be a an ok unit for testing the caps on my LCD that range from 100uF to 1000uF? Or would I need to spend more and get something like a $30...

Ok, I want to replace the C0612 (1000 uF @ 25V) and the C0604 (1000 uF @ 16V).

After reading all the forum FAQ's and tutorials I'm still having trouble figuring out what types of caps I need. Maybe someone can let me know if this is right.

Again, here is a shot...

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also need to know what exactly to buy. I was checking out the shopping guide and then I realized that I didn't know what type of caps these were. I also included another shot of the other capacitors on the board just in case.Re: No power on a Acer AL1916

Just disassembled my "Acer AL1916A B" like above and I belive that I have the same problem with the power supply board. I'm a real DIY guy when it comes to PC's so I'm interested in following the advice here and replacing the caps.

The only problem is that I have never soldered anything.

Anyway, the only caps that seem to be bulging are the C0612 (1000 uF @ 25V) and the C0604 (1000 uF @ 16V) as shown below. The video board looks good. I'm hoping that I can just remove them an then solder replacement...
