  • Re: Panasonic SA-BT230 "Please Wait"

I'm waiting for a replacement cap to be delivered but meantime maybe someone could suggest how to test the existing cap out of circuit. It doesn't look damaged and I'd have thought a duff electrolytic cap would show some physical sign of a problem. Also, the circuit diagram says the cap should be 270uF/400V but the actual cap on the board is 180uF/400V. Should I replace like for like or go with the circuit diagram/parts list? A word of warning - the underside of the PCB is marked "HOT" near the cap and they ain't joking -...

Many thanks chaps, I'll try replacing the cap as advised and let you know. However, I did check the output voltages to the Power PCB, Main PCB and D-Amp PCB and they all *seemed* to be OK.

If it's reading short on a con check, I'd have thought 0V but I'll check and let you know. I intend to remove capacitor C5183 from the SMPS PCB and test it for a short in isolation although I'd be surprised as I'd expect a capacitor to fail open circuit. If that checks out, I'll remove the main transformer and test it in isolation.

  • Panasonic SA-BT230 "Please Wait"

    Hi,

I have a SA-BT230 home cinema system that is showing "Please Wait" all the time. On a different thread I was able to obtain a copy of the service manual and proceeded on the assumption that something was probably wrong with the power supply (SMPS).

I carried out the continuity checks on the main transformer (admittedly in situ) as indicated in the service manual. When I checked between pins 16 and 17 I got a short. According to the circuit diagram, pin 17 is +18V and pin 16 is ground. I'd have expected a short here to blow the fuse but it hasn't. Anyway,...

  • Re: Panasonic SC-BT230 Blu-ray Home Cinema

I've taken the box to bits as far as removing the lid, front panel, BD drive, and power supply module. The PSM doesn't show any obvious major signs of defect but there are a few toffee-like deposits on the bottom of the PCB which I guess could be just flux deposits that weren't cleaned properly (thinks back to apprentice days and floods of Arklone). That said, there is a bit of a burnt PCB smell in the area of main transformer. Incidentally, before I took it apart, when I forced it to shut down (power off held for 10 seconds or so) I was...

Many thanks Andrew - I did download a copy of the service manual from this site (for which, many thanks TW2005) but I hadn't got round to looking to see what advice it might give. I have taken the lid off to look for obvious damage (blown caps, obvious dry joints etc.) but didn't see any. One thing I did want to do was remove the BD drive to see whether I can use the mechanical latch to open it as I wondered if it was jammed (see my note about the "OPEN"/"CLOSE"/"READ" message. I couldn't get the drive out...

    Hi all,

Since this thread seems to be about the SA-BT230, I thought I'd post my problem here first rather than kick off a new thread. Please tell me if I'm wrong and should start a new thread.

My 6-year-old SA-BT230 worked fine until yesterday when on switching on, all it would do was display the "PLEASE WAIT" message continuously and did nothing else. To switch off again I have to hold the power button down for 10 seconds and if I try the factory reset [+ VOLUME], [OPEN/CLOSE] and [POWER], it doesn't...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hi all,

So where to start - a very long time ago I did a 3 year RAF aircraft electronics apprenticeship specialising in radio and radar and subsequently worked on Jaguar, Vulcan and Tornado aircraft (that'll give those in the know a good idea of how long ago). Since I left the service I've worked in a variety of hardware and software related roles and currently work as a technical bid leader in the aerospace division of a major global industrial conglomerate that also makes lightbulbs I've always been interested...
