Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
Just breaking in to make a comment about reheating BGA's....
Don't do it. The only thing that will help is reballing with tin/lead balls.
Every time you reheat the board, it will increase the chance you create blisters on the board ( depending on the quality of the board ).
So, if in doubt, always reball!...

Had a look into it, and I am sorry.....we do not have the chip

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
Cool you found some ! I had a look today, but only found some in the SOIC package, so surface mount
Tomorrow I will have a look for the other one.
IF i have one, maybe it's a good plan to mail me the dump, so i can flash it for you. Makes it all so much more easy, right?
I'll keep you posted!

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
I'll have a look this week. Maybe I have some. I'll program and erase them to test. After that I can send you some if you'd like.
If so, please let me know what shape you need, ok ?Last edited by sparx_59; 07-31-2016, 02:05 AM.

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
Hey buglitter
I agree with you about chips on sockets....oxidation can be a problem after time.
I would read every chip several times to see if the data is the same avery time.
If it is, chances are you can write some fresh ones wich will work in circuit.
This way sou end up with clean leads and fresh flash chips.
In my experience, those suckers go from good to bad very fast when problems start, so I would do it soon if I where you. Maybe you're able to get your hands on a working amp, and copy those...

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
WOW....nice replies on this subject, I love it
Since law forbids lead containing solder, we electronics ppl have been given problems we do not want. The finished solder is ( often with BGA's ) waiting to crack. Like you mentioned, high temps and cooling down is the cause of this.
The glue underneath the components however, is necessary when the board is soldered in a solder flow bath, preventing the components from falling off. It should not be on the leads
Removing components is indeed tricky,...

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
I think you may be right at this one.
Only thing I know is i checked all voltages, regulators and clocks.
Nothing was out of the ordinary.
Let's see what time tells us after this fix
My receiver works perfect after the chip replacement, and i hope it will do so for many years, because it sounds so good!
And thanks for the compliment

Ok, I know
What I meant, was I can order @ work.
I pay a fair price, and it's fast.

Well, I am lucky enough to use one of these : http://www.xeltek.com/universal-programmer
We have 2 of them @ work, and in my break I program them.
Also can I order chips as a private person Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on ...vate person :)Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker

I use the exact same chip. They are still available.

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
Yeah, 1st log I found was around 2007 and up.
Lots of denon's died after 5 or 6 years.
I really don't know why no one copied the rom before.
Probably because they had to remove the rom from a working board.
I just took a shot at it, by copiying a rom witch dump looked ok.
It could not have been an accindental overwrite of data, because the write enable is pulled up to the positive rail, so it had to be a bad readable rom. This also explains why the board worked sometimes and after turning a knob, it stopped...Last edited by sparx_59; 04-24-2016, 01:16 AM.

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
To be complete: The problem is the IC817. This is a flash chip wich holds the data for the DSP uprocessor. This chip will sometimes fail. The data is still in it, but the processor has problems reading it due to wear. In other words: the chip is getting old. I was lucky enough to be able to read the data from a faulty chip with a programmer. Flashing this data in a freash chip resulted in a fully working rom. I had replaced two boards with these chips, and this fixed the problem. I know Denon does not support the avr 2802 anymore, so I...

Re: Denon avr 2802 with no sound on speaker
Hi guys,
Old topic, I know , but still I want to let you know I fixed it today.
I was able to flash some new chips and replace them on the DSP board.
Until now I fixed my 2 receivers, and I am willing to share it.
Please feel free to contact me.
