Re: Help identifying power ic?
I changed that cap after taking the picture. The IC turned out to be a LDO as suggested but after searching for a few hours I was unable to find any replacements locally. The only markings on it were DDAAC not sure what that was supposed to signify.
Edit: Forgot to mention that in the interest of time I removed the offending component and just went with a 7805 mounted to the side for 5v supply. There aren't many SMD suppliers locally and I was not willing to wait.
Thanks all for your help....

Help identifying power ic?
Good Day,
I was recently presented with a inexpensive DVR that had a short in its power supply. After searching I was able to isolate the issue to the 5v rail, specifically a 6pin IC with the markings DDAAC. It seems to be some form of power ic or a buck converter or sorts.
I have been searching but cant seem to find a way to identify these ICs, could you point me in the right direction please. Attached to this post is an image showing a similar circuit on the board that is unaffected.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Dell N4050 suspicious death
If I remember correctly I tried that once before. I was unsuccessful though as my DIY programmer (flashprog + arduino mega) was being shorted circuited when connected. I should be getting a hot air station soon so I will try lifting, programming and/or replacing the chip when I get the tools.
I will post my results when I try that. I was just worried that I was overlooking something that was simple/obvious due to my lack of experience.
Thanks for your recommendation.

Re: Dell N4050 suspicious death
Sadly I do not have access to an oscilloscope as I am really only just getting into hardware repairs. Is there anyway to test this with simple tools?
I am not really afraid of damaging the board as I have already gotten another laptop and have decided to use this board, as well as others, as a platform to learn on.

Dell N4050 suspicious death
Hi, I am new here and would really like is some help could be offered as I have ran out of ideas.
I have here with me a Dell 14r N4050 that died on me a bit suddenly a few months back. The machine was being used, then powered down and when I went back to power it on it would not power up. Pulling it down and inspecting the board shows no sign of failure other than the power and charging LEDs being constantly and dimly lit once current is applied to the board.
It does this with all the user removable components removed, RAM, wifi, CPU etc.
Things I have confirmed...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hello, I am Antonio from Jamaica.
I am a student of the HCIT here on the island studying to become a network administrator. My interests don't stop there however, I have always been interested in the way circuits work and have been spending some time educating myself on how to repair them.
I look forward to learning as much as I can here and, in time, contributing in anyway I can.
