  • Gateway GT5411E mobo D945GCLG1

I just received another customer PC that powers up, fans run at full speed but it will not POST. I opened the case, blew out lots of dust an found just one cap a United Chemi-Con cap with a swollen top. The capacitor reference is C6H1, 3300uF, 6.3vdc It is a KCG series. From reading the boards, this one is flagged as a crap cap. This cap sits right next to the memory stick.

Past experience has shown me that a PC that powers on with the fans running at full speed but will not POST is usually related to a memory issue. In this case the cap that is faulty is used to filter power to...

  • Re: Asus ptgd1-la

Confirmed that replacing CE51, and CE52 fixes the board. I also found that the power supply had failed, and that one of the memory sticks was also bad.

After I replaced the blown cap and the other of the same type for good measure, I powered up the board, the PS LED would blink ON/OFF but the board would not power up. I then replaced the PS and the board would power up with all the fans running at full speed but still no POST. I next removed all 3 of the 512 MB memory sticks that were installed on the motherboard. I then installed only one memory...

Right on c_hegge, I just removed the cap from the board and with closer inspection under the lighted magnifying glass I was able to confirm that it is a LTEC crap. It is rated at 820uF 6.3vdc. Other markings on it are: LMB105, 3D01D.

  • Asus ptgd1-la

A customer of mine just brought me his PC with a blown PS. I verified the PS is bad plus I found a single blown cap on the mobo. It is CE51. It is hard to make out the logo since the color combination is hard to read. It appears to be made by Ltec? Litec? or some thing similar. Anyways the cap is rated at 820uF 6.3vdc

CE52 is also made by the same manufacturer but it is not blown.

Just like to update and confirm that replacing the mentioned caps fixed this motherboard. I replaced those caps with the Panasonic low-esr series

  • Re: KZG - KZJ - Same Electrolyte

I just Goggled the KZG series and this post came up. Wow you are right on the money with your prediction. A little over two years from this post, both the KZG and KZJ failed on a Dell Mobo. What is interesting is that the Mobo only had one of each and they were the only ones that failed. No other caps are faulty. It looks like United Chemi-con has now discontinued both those series....

  • Dell Dimension 4700 - Bad United Chemi-Con

I was hired to troubleshoot a Dell Dimension 4700 PC that kept having random keyboard errors. I checked the BIOS log and noticed it had multiple errors with not only the keyboard but also with the memory, mouse, fan, etc.

I opened the cover to clean it figuring the heavy dust buildup was causing the CPU to overheat and generating these random errors. After blowing the dust out I found two United Chemi-Con caps leaking oil and with bulging tops.

The only two caps one each of the KZG, and KZJ series on the whole motherboard were bad. All other caps by United Chemi-Con...

Sorry for the confusion... as I don't see a way to fix a typo in this forum. Yes they are indeed SAMXON

  • I-Inc iF191D Bad Saxon caps

I was given a 19" I-Inc iF191D monitor that was built in Aug 2008. When powered ON, the green power LED indicator would flash ON/OFF but there is no video present. I opened the monitor and inspected the power supply section and immediately found several Saxon caps leaking electrolytic, with swollen tops.

    C14, C113, C118, Saxon 1000uF/25V, 105C, SF(M), leaking/swollen tops
    C119 Saxon 470uF/25V 105C swollen top

I replaced these and all other Saxon caps on the power supply board, and the monitor now works great.

  • Re: JBL Northridge E-Series E250P

    UPDATE:

I got my ESR-micro v4.0 today. I fired up the micro and I decided to test all the caps that I removed from the JBL sub. To my complete surprise all the caps that tested good using the LCR meter but were replaced anyways just in case are in fact bad when tested using the ESR meter. Not only was the ESR rating exceed by 80% or more on most of the caps removed, a great number of them also measured less then half of their printed capacitance. This handy tester proved to me that using an LCR meter is like doing half the job.

  • JBL Northridge E-Series E250P

I have a JBL Northridge E-Series E250P self-powered sub-woofer system. This past weekend, the sub-woofer while playing music started generating some random extremely loud popping noises. This was the first sign of trouble in the 7 years that I have had the system.

While powered down in the auto standby mode, without cause the sub would randomly wake up and generate some mad popping sounds then a while later it would again return to the auto standby mode. This cycle would repeat randomly unless the system was powered OFF using the rear AC power switch.

    When I removed...

  • Re: List of Bad Cap Manufacturers

I just found another crap cap that can be added to the list. The name of this brand is "Lasting". What a play on words. If you try to locate any information on it using a search engine you will be flooded by "long lasting" capacitor stories. Very clever indeed.
