Re: Enermax EG701AX-VH shutting down when powered
Thank you for your opinions, I don't know if I'm going to replace the other caps because they are pretty expensive and I'm not sure if it's worth it (who am I kidding, I know I'll replace them because it's fun, but I don't know when).
About the fans, I was actually thinking about replacing them but I am amazed at how they are still working flawlessly after all these years when I've had fans crap out on me after much much less. So they're staying, they deserve it.

Re: Enermax EG701AX-VH shutting down when powered
Well I have replaced the caps up to 220 uf plus the two diodes and the transistor with the corroded leads and now the PSU appears to be working fine. I have put it back in the case and the pc turns on fine, it doesn't explode or catch fire if I try playing a game so thank you for pointing me in the right direction
Now that I have half new caps and half 11-year-old caps I would like to know how urgently I should complete the recap replacing the output caps and the main filter, because I'm not going to have time for...

Re: Enermax EG701AX-VH shutting down when powered
I would try that if I had the caps or if I could buy them in a store around here, but since I have to buy them online I would like to get them all with a single order, possibly not spending 50 euro for 60 caps when I need 20. That's why I would like to know if I can replace different types of caps with a single one.
I have pulled the transistor and the two diodes with the corroded leads. The transistor is labelled A928A Y-E22, the two diodes are 1N 5819 but looking for a replacement I have seen they...

Re: Enermax EG701AX-VH shutting down when powered
Well this PSU has been running for nearly 11 years so something must have gone wrong with Enermax's evil plans. I can't seem to remove it anyway, it is hard and comes away only in small pieces, also it is in hard to reach places. The brown corrosive stuff I have removed earlier instead broke when I touched it and came away easily, I'll just replace the components with the corroded leads.
Now, about the caps, I have made a diagram of the caps used so you can see it.
There are 22 caps of...

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
Don't worry, I find your information very useful.
Ehm... I read something about PCB thermal shock and said "hey I'll just put the card in when the oven is still off so that the temperature will rise nice and slow. Brilliant!"
Well, live and learn I guess.
If the temperature of the PCB really reached 300+ degrees don't you think that they may have been damaged or at least degraded?
Thank you....

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
Well tinfoil doesn't normally get hot in the oven, I can always take it with my bare hands right after taking it out of the oven when I make a cake.
I would have kept the card but the PCB was really foul and sticky, isopropyl alcohol would only spread the burnt flux even more. I should have tried with alien acid blood (I have recently seen the movies again)....

Re: Enermax EG701AX-VH shutting down when powered
Yeah that's a good point, I may just recap the whole PSU while I'm at it. Now I am going to make a list of the capacitors.
About that... I have removed some brown crap off a couple of diodes and another component labelled Q10 and I have noticed that their terminals seem corroded... I have attached a picture. Should they be replaced as well?
I find the yellow glue harder to remove. What is it for anyway? It seems applied randomly....

Enermax EG701AX-VH shutting down when powered
Hello guys,
I have had this PSU since September 2005 and it has always worked fine without any interventions, occasional cleaning aside. It is rated for 600 W.
Yesterday morning I powered up my PC after that I had left the PSU unplugged for the night because of a thunderstorm, it ran for a few seconds and then shut down. I said "uh oh" and hit the power button again, it powered on fine and then I used it all day. Then before going to sleep I unplugged it again to see if it would fail to power up again this morning.
Today upon pressing the...

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
Yes, sorry but I got busy with other stuff and then I just forgot to update you.
I eventually did the reflow, and it didn't work.
I shielded the board with tinfoil, applied flux on the sides of the chip (maybe too much) and attempted the reflow. I followed some guide I found here with temperatures up to about 230°C but something obviously went very wrong, as you can see in the pics.
After I let the card cool I took off the tinfoil and saw that the flux was burnt and spread all around...

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
No, it's a different heatsink.
It causes one PC to power on and off in a loop, another one doesn't go past "VGA detected" during the POST.
Tried that, doesn't work.
I was planning to shield the rest of the card with tinfoil and leave just the GPU and its rear exposed, that should do.
Now I have found some flux in gel form, but maybe a friend of mine can get me some liquid flux. Would you suggest me to use...

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
I am going to try, I just don't understand if I the VGA should be facing up or down when I bake it.
Also, should I get some flux before attempting this?
I was talking about the die. You can see the two bottom corners are lightly chipped, the right one more than the left one....Last edited by mitchmaster; 05-10-2016, 03:18 AM.

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
I have tried still another cooler which would allow me to flex the card but nothing happens, actually the motherboard doesn't go past "VGA detected".

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
I have attached pictures of the actual card since you asked.
I'll see if I can find one, a friend should have it.
Yes, that's the stock heatsink.
I don't know, I had already removed the heatsink many times before during the life of this card and I never had any problems.
I'll try and see what happens, the card is pretty sturdy with the cooler mounted though, I don't know if I can flex it.
There may be another...

Re: X1900 XT displaying artifacts
Today I took the card apart to take the pictures asked by ChaosLegionnaire, cleaned it and put it back in and now it doesn't work at all for no apparent reason. It causes one of my PCs to power off and back on infinitely, in another one it stays powered with a red T_FAULT LED. Oh well...
I tried to fiddle with it for some time, checked for visible damage but couldn't find anything, so I thought I wouldn't waste any more time on it.
Thank you for your help anyway.
For the record, the card is a Sapphire...

X1900 XT displaying artifacts
Hi all,
I would like your help to fix a X1900 XT video card that doesn't work properly, in fact it never did.
A little history: I bought the card in Oct 2006, it was fine in games and the various 3DMarks but it would display artifacts in ATITool (that stress test with the furry cube from 10 years ago if anybody remembers). I never RMAed it because I probably thought that they would send it back claiming that it worked fine.
The artifacts in ATITool got worse over time and the card eventually started displaying them in games as well but I could live...

I don't know, that would point to a short somewhere between the front panel pins and the PSU....

Re: Recapping a DFI nF4 Ultra-D
Hi, yes I would get four red LEDs and the board wouldn't boot.
You should consider replacing at least the seven KZG caps on your board, they may have gone bad even without showing any signs. Check the diagram in the first post to see which ones they are

Re: Recapping a DFI nF4 Ultra-D
Thank you for your replies.
I have eventually replaced the caps and now the board is working fine, actually I'm using it right now to type this.
The capjob looks like crap though, my solder sucker is worse than I remembered so I didn't manage to clear many of the holes. In hindsight I should have spent 15€ and get one with a heated tip off Amazon... well maybe I'll fix it someday before retiring the board for good.
Thank you again for your help
