    Re: Ost

    Hi 370forlife,
I think its good value the CX and my sys is quite small only requires 250W maxed out, so I got upgrade power if required. I saw some 40$ supplies and thought wow Ill go there but a little further reading has I think paid off.

Many thanks for your replies and I wish you good luck.

    Hi,
Yes correct first time the CX400, Imnew to this what should I do to ensure adequate cooling? I attempted my first recap of my 2004 machine with Panasonic Caps and fingers crossed two months later the pc runs better than it ever did.

This led me to search the net for power supplies which use Panasonic Caps but it came up blank ( any ideas )? , lastly do pc buffs build their own supplies and what kind of money would a 500W cost to build....Im assuming you can buy the board and screw it to a prebuilt metal box , wire up the cables ( could be techy...

    1st Try!

    Hi,
I found myself with regular crashes ( several in one night over a 2 hour period ), I tried all the tweaks not realising it was a hardware issue not software, A helpful local engineer told me some caps had failed and advised I could repair, or upgrade, I began to read and found badcaps.

I found the two failed caps and ordered a full set of superior Panasonic replacements, just to say my solder technique is atrocious, but I took time and managed to get one cap secure but the other does have a little give
    ( generally NOT good).

    Why post this, well...

  • How Long

    Hi All,
I just installed two 1500uf 16v Pansonic Caps to my four year old GIGABYTE board....this was my first ever recap....I think the first went OK
( solderwise ) i.e. the solder looks well applied and that 1st cap is solid with no give, the second solder application is fair but that cap has a little give.

Upon first boot the POST went well and current all around sys performance is noteably better than has been for a long time.

How long before I can be confident that the two caps are functioning correctly?

    Regards,

    B...

    Hello kaniki,
Many thanks for the reply, that gives me a great guideline to follow.

    Hi kaniki,
Sorry....What is the tpyical range of Caps in terms of uf and Voltage ( lowest to highest uf range ) one can expect to find on the midspec gaming motherboard.

While on the topic, yes if a chart exists for replacing caps great....one showing safe voltage / uf spec for replacing the above midrange gaming motherboard caps i.e. 10% up or down on installed cap voltage or uf spec is a safe margin ( this is not correct spec but chart should be correct )?

    All the best,...

Ok , thank you. Lastly are there any other basic tools I should consider for other parts of the board within reason for home use only?

    Re: Toolkit

    Hi ,
Got a solder sucker. I have ample solder 0.7 Sn99 Cu 0.7 with A11flux, EU spec.

Lastly I think it would be wise to get a capacitance meter, this one has a cap range of 500nf to 3000uf (Meterman PMFX P51), when cap is removed by applying + and - terms I will be able to read if capacitor is gone or not right? This cap range will be ample Im sure. What is the average range of Caps used in Motherboards? I dont think one can measure the validity of a cap while its in the board cheaply ....only tool here is an expensive scope am I right?

    Toolkit

    Hi All,
First post, This is for home use only Id like to price a basic motherboard tooling kit for checking the functionality of mainboard components only, if not too expensive. List all the tools required please apart from 30W soldering iron.

Also what grade of solders should be used for various jobs that a motherboard might require.

Just browsing the issue at the minute.

    All good advice welcome.
