Re: the gutless, bloated, and fried power supply hall of shame
Thanks for the answer, i have another question, there are some cheap psus with no places for pi coils, can more capacitance compensate for that, or the ripple will be through the roof regardless? for example 2x2200uF 16V instead of 1000uF...

Re: Help identifying rectifier type
It was scavenged from the secondary of a very very old AT psu, the PSU is in the trash long ago.
Measured with tester in diode mode reads 122, 123.Last edited by forza764; 01-02-2013, 08:12 PM.

Help identifying rectifier type
I have this TO-220 rectifier: Photron PSR16C40CT but i'm not sure what type is it, Fast Recovery? Schottky? also i would like to know how many amps it can take.

Re: Questions about pi filters
If the smaller caps cause issues, why in poly-mods they change from say...3300uF to 820uF polys?

Questions about pi filters
Hi, in psu and cpu vrm i see that there are a coil and capacitor filter in the outputs, i read somewhere that these filters are tuned to certain frecuency.
Questions:
1- If i change the cap value the filter will work ok?
2- Does the coil need to be changed to another value too?
3- What performs better, badly tuned Pi Filter or just a cap without coil?

What brand is this polymer capacitor?
Motherboard is an Asus M5A97, are these caps japanese? good quality?...

Re: Iso-400 300w
I have a ISO psu, but it was damaged by its previous owner and i used it for parts. The atx 24 pin is melted in the yellow wire, the primary is shorted, and a big trace in the pcb was desintegrated.
Its looks different, the heatsinks are a little bigger, and the silicon parts are other models.
The caps are Koshin, and Furhjju, or something like that. The wires are 18 AWG.

Re: I'm trying to modify this psu (Diamond 500w)
Psu semi-recapped and almost ready for another test.
Almost all caps in the secondary are Rubycon's from a Sega psu, except two KZG from a mobo, and one Teapo for the 5VSB.
I also added a .47uF x-cap and a on/off switch to the case. Next time i'll see if i can find a good schottky for the 12v and good caps for the primary.
I wonder if this psu is ok for the following pc:
Amd Athlon x2 2.2 ghz 65w
2gb ddr2 800 mhz
Foxconn micro-atx mobo
Ati Radeon HD 4670...

Re: I'm trying to modify this psu (Diamond 500w)
Problem solved.
The mospec f16c20c was missing a plastic washer in the screw, lol.
In this last test, at first the psu lasted like one second on, then shut off. When connected to an old mobo, it started ok.
+12v - 12.01v
+5v - 5.01v
+3.3v - 3.32v
+5VSB - 5.01v

Re: I'm trying to modify this psu (Diamond 500w)
Well, i cleaned the best i could, and still...no start.
The +5vsb reads 5.01 volts, between +12 and ground i get 43 ohms.
To the side of the x cap i installed, there was a jumper J1 i didn't remove, i don't know if that is causing problems.

Re: I'm trying to modify this psu (Diamond 500w)
Secondary ready, and installed.
I will test it tomorrow, if it works ok, im gonna recap and change to a bigger case that comes with a on/off switch, the original doesn't have a switch and the 5vsb is always on, thing that i dont like....

Re: I'm trying to modify this psu (Diamond 500w)
Ok, i soldered the bridge rectifier, the input coil, x cap, and the pi coils. The caps haven't been replaced because i want to test it first, maybe tommorrow.
Some of the parts came from a dead ISO psu, the primary was shorted, lots of burned traces, and now its missing a lots of components, hehe.
For the secondary i have two MBR3045, but the holes spacing is too small for those rectifiers, any ideas?...

I'm trying to modify this psu (Diamond 500w)
Hi, my father gave me this psu as a gift and after opening it, i found that is missing some filtering coils in the input and output. I have some coils and caps from dead psus to put in, but i can't because there is a resistor blocking the space for the input coil and one of the pi coils that should be in the secondary.
My question is ¿is ok to remove the resistors and put the coils in?
The psu has about 6 months of light use, and it still works, i just wanna improve it for learning and maybe use it as a backup....
