Re: Hanns.G HZ251 white screen
Well, duh! I've been looking for the wrong thing. Anyway, I followed what you gave me and the info here and I located a fuse labeled FB101. It looks similar to the one in the picture in the PDF on that thread, but its not labeled just F101. So anyway, I tested it and did not get OL. I got just 1. So what is the next step now?Re: Hanns.G HZ251 white screen

Re: Problems with trying Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
yeah, thats somewhat similar to Debian. I had to install the wifi firmware with apt-get (think my wifi card is a Realtek chipset) but I tried with an Atheros wifi card and it worked off the bat. I dont think its so much to do with Copyright issues (they really do suck though) in debian as it is to do with being as open source as possible. I can respect that but at the same time some packages, firmware, etc are necessary for basic operation in some cases. All that said however, I am very pleased with my Debian installation...

BTW, could you describe or link to a picture of said fuse to make sure I'm looking at the right one? Thank you

Re: Problems with trying Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Yeah, I'm mainly a Debian user. I did use ubuntu a while ago but also disliked the direction they were headed so I switched over to Debian (which was a pretty good switch IMO)

Re: Problems with trying Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Hunt as in use Google? I haven't been using Linux for very long and its actually really easy to find information on the internet. Windows is expensive garbage and at least IHMO, there's no big reason to use it other than gaming. Sure, theres a lot of software out there that is windows only. But you'll find with linux, there is more often than not an open source alternative....

Hanns.G HZ251 white screen
Hello,
I recently got an older non-working LCD monitor from a friend. I would like to repair it as it is much better than my current monitor. I am pretty good at soldering, however I am a bit rusty with a multimeter. Anyway, after I plug it in and turn it on, I get a completely white/gray screen. I opened it up and looked at the PCB's and no caps seem to be bulging, but I'm no expert.

Here are a couple (crappy) pictures taken of the two boards in the monitor. The white screen I am seeing is the same as the last...

Re: Here we go again! Microsoft puts GWX updates as recommended.
I'm still using windows 7 pro, but when the time comes when its no longer safe, I will most likely install linux. It's a shame because all the new games will soon move away from win7 and I just upgraded my main PC. Oh well, I'd rather not use Nazisoft Vindows 10

Re: Chinese soldering iron?
I'd like a nice soldering station, but I still have a cheap soldering iron from 3M. Bought it at walmart a few years ago when our local one still sold electrical stuff. It works great but it needs a new tip. I was wondering if this one would be decent for my purposes?http://www.radioshack.com/soldering-work-station-with-dual-powered-iron/6402184.html.Re: Chinese soldering iron?

Re: Where to buy solder?
Amazon, radioshack, walmart (some of them), Lowes, Home depot. I get some there, usually from radioshack though. I also have a local HW store that has some nice Alpha Fry solder. I use that a lot.

Re: CRT TVs
I have a cheap RCA from 1998 that I use for all my old games and computers (C64, sometimes my Tandy 1000EX). They don't hurt my eyes at all. I just don't use it for new consoles. Which I don't have many, so there you go.

Re: General understanding of electronics....
I learned from experience working on old computers rescued from recycling. Taking them apart and upgrading, repairing, etc. I do have an old book from the 1960's on electricity and electronics. I think its called "A first electricity book for boys" or something. Has some good info in it.
