  • Re: Dell 2407WFPb LCD monitor dead

    Thank you.

I have read through that thread, which mostly concerns the power supply.

I'm hopeful that my problem may just be on this ribbon cable and switch pcb.

A real shame that circuit diagrams and general info isn't available.

I really don't like the construction of the lead, in the way that it attaches to the pcb holding the switches. It's glorified Sellotape, containing 18 "wires" of printed aluminium, just wrapped over the pcb. Who knows whether there is good conductiv...

    A few more.

These are of the logic board connector for the ribbon cable....

    Thank you.
Yes, the Youtube video is of the same monitor. I'll post some pics today.
The ribbon cable has 18 wires which push into a clamp connector. A poor arrangement as I cannot readily check that each wire has a good connection. It has a clasp which turns through 90 degrees to lock the ribbon into the female connection on the logic board.
There are 6 LEDs and 6 button switches on the bit of circuit board containing the ribbon cable.
I've been doing some continuity checks with my test meter to try and see which wires...

Just thinking about what I've written:

    1. I need to research switch mode power supplies.
    2. I'm wondering whether I've broken something on the front power switch. This is just a button switch on a ribbon cable. It has an LED which should light when the power is on. Anyone know what voltage this would use? I'm guessing 5V DC
    3. How would I get a circuit diagram for my monitor? The Dell site doesn't show anything.

  • Dell 2407WFPb LCD monitor dead

My beloved Dell 2407WFPb RevA00 has died.

I've stripped out the 4 boards and am missing any obvious fault. I can't see bulging caps, burnt wires or components.

I've checked many fuses but may be missing something. I cannot light the mains power on led on the switch panel, although there are many voltages around the power supply board. I don't know much about switch mode power supplies.

The fuses I've checked as Ok are these. I seek help, please. Are there more fuses lurking or am I on the wrong track?

All help greatly welcomed. I've searched...

  • Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures

Well, I removed the 5 obviously bulging Nichicon caps.

Not an easy job. Easy to melt the solder and remove the old cap but the hole on the board was still blocked with solder.

    Spent ages, got it clean.

I then tested the old caps with a large battery. They held their charge when tested with my meter, so maybe they weren't the fault.

I bought 5 replacements for only £4 ($7) and fitted them easily. No good.

I'm thinking of ditching the mobo and buying something...

    Thanks very much.
Replacement caps seem to be cheap enough.
I just hope that it's only the caps that have failed and not some other parts too.
We'll see. I'll let people know my results, hopefully next week.

  • Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures

Assuming that I'll get nowhere with Dell my options seem to be:
    1. Find a replacement board. Ebay or suchlike. Maybe hard to do as these boards are in short supply, and a vendor may sell a broken one
2.Take a hacksaw to the case and fit a non-Dell board.
    3. Replace the caps. There seems to be 23 and 5 are very bulged. Should I just change the bulged ones? Will any cap do as a replacement, as long as the voltage and capacitance are at least what is listed on the old ones?

I have to say I'll never...

  • Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures

My Optiplex GX270 has just died.
It's been acting strangely for the past 2 weeks. I live in England and the weather is warm, high summer, actually.
The pc fan was screaming, then the pc would turn off. Restarting would give no video output but the cd rom drive led would flash 4 times.
I opened the case and many Nichicon capacitors are heavily bulged.

After an hour on the phone to Dell, they refuse to help as I am a second owner. I bought the pc from a computer shop when it was 3 months old. I've...
