Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
Okay, finally got home long enough to test it out.
Pin 3 reads 4.82v
Pin 5 reads 4.89v
Oh, and the backlight is lit.....wait, what?
It appears that the problem was just a sketchy connection of the inverter wires to the lamps.
Huh, go figure!
Well, I guess it's fixed for now.
Thanks for the help Bill.
I'll be sure to post back if anything else pops up.

Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
Hahaha good one!
I'll check the voltages asap, probably tomorrow afternoon when I get home.
Do I need to plug everything back into the board or just certain things?
I assume I need to plug in the cable that connects to the front panel switches, but what about the HV cables to the lamps, do those need to be connected also?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
Then? It's only been about a month! lol
C'mon Bill, you aren't going senile on me, are ya?
Seriously, though, thanks for the help. I'll be glad to recap (no pun intended) any details that may have slipped your mind since we talked last.
I'll try to get some time this evening to test out the pins and report back.
What voltage should I be looking for on pin 3?
5v like pin 5 or something else?
Thanks again,
Mike...

Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
Hi Bill,
I'm so sorry for the long delay. I haven't forgot about this, but I've been swamped with work and have had no time for extra projects.
I opened up the PDF and tried to figure which one is pin 1 on my board.
Mine doesn't have the half-circle shape on one end, but it does have an indent. Is that pin 1?
Also, what's the safest way to power the board and put it into the "on" state?
I can plug in the AC cable to the board, but I don't have a way of turning it on without at least...

Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
Okay, new photos attached at the size requested.
I can do macro shots of any particular parts of the board if needed.
I'm not sure what part of this is the inverter controller, but all the relevant numbers should be visible in the photos.
Thanks again,
-Mike...

Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
That model number sounds right, and that does look like my board, but I swear I don't remember seeing all those components on the back side!
Oh, well, they say the mind is the first to go, right?!
So, assuming this is my board, where do I start testing?

Re: Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
I didn't post a photo of the bottom because there are no components on the back side, just solder traces and pads.
The monitor was already nonfunctional and partially disassembled when I got it, so I don't have the exact model number.
I also don't know what behavior it exhibited before total failure, for the same reason.
Thanks for the info, I'll check it out this evening and report back.

Dell 24" LCD, bad inverter or light - testing?
Hi all,
I have an older (circa 2005) 24" Dell LCD that powers on, but has no backlight.
I have confirmed that the screen is functional with a bright light.
I pulled it apart and have the power board on my bench, photo attached.
Larger photos are available if anyone needs to see anything specific.
How do I go about testing the inverter portion of the board and/or the CCFL to determine which is faulty?
Thanks in advance,
-Mike...

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 215TW, power on, no video
Okay, update time.
I haven't had time to test the other components as suggested.
However, the new caps came today and I got those installed.
I popped it back together and powered up.
Now I have the blue power light, and I can tell the backlight is on, which I don't think I had before.
I still get no video and no on-screen menus either.
Do I need to go back and test the other parts as suggested above, or does having the backlight on eliminate those as a possible issue. If so, should I be suspecting...

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 215TW, power on, no video
Thanks, that's good info!
I'll test as many of those as I can find and report back.
My replacement caps shipped today, so hopefully I'll be able to reassemble and test soon.

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 215TW, power on, no video
That sounds prudent.
How do I test them?
I'm not even sure I could identify them, let alone test them!
If I post a photo of the board, could you call each item out and tell me what value each should test out at?
I have good photos of the board, but it's too late to post them tonight.
I'll add 'em as soon as I can.
Thanks for the help,
Mike P....

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 215TW, power on, no video
Well, in the vacuum of responses, I decided to go ahead an crack it open.
I got it disassembled down to the 2 main boards, and found that several of the caps on the power board are bulged. I'll assume they're dead and go ahead and replace all the caps on that board, there's only 7, including the large power cap.
If anyone has input on what else I need to be checking, please share.

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 215TW, power on, no video
Okay, so you think that even with the very strange "failure signs" that I saw before the monitor died completely, it could still be fixable without replacing any major components?
I just want to be sure I'm not totally wasting my time before I crack this thing open.
Also, I'm going to need much more specific instructions about testing the different components, but we'll get to that later.
Thanks!
Mike P.

Samsung Syncmaster 215TW, power on, no video
Hi all,
After my wildly successful first foray into LCD repair with mucho guidance (aka hand-holding!) from PlainBill, I've decided to try once again.
One of my clients had this Samsung in his office for about 3 years. Over time, it developed an odd magenta vertical line a little left of center.
It apparently didn't bother him too much, because he kept using it.
Later on, it got where it would flicker sometimes. Then the screen started to "jump and shake" for lack of a better term.
Finally, it died completely and was replaced.
So I got...
