• Re: What an analog ESR meter will and won't do

Just use a low frequency signal generator (10-100 kHz) and a scope. Here is one reference: http://www.anatekcorp.com/ttg/tiptrick.htm#Scope%20ESR
I used this method in the 1980's when I was a high school student.

I have the Badcaps ESR Meter from MiLuElectronics in ?Romania?, and the ESR-micro V4.0 from www.radiodevices.ru which is sold in the US on the www.prc68.com website at the bottom of the products page (no relation to seller).

The version of the MiLu meter I have...

• Re: Your Water Heater, another place for crap caps to hide

A fact of life?

When I was a kid water heaters didn't have (or need) microprocessors.

I still think that the control system should outlive the water heater.

Replacing the module is ~ $330 at the appliance parts store in town, or
$800 for the water heater at the trade wholesaler. Probably $1500 delivered and installed if you call the plumber...

Or $0.45 for two caps...

• Your Water Heater, another place for crap caps to hide

I have a Lochinvar LNV041 water heater from 2006 with a Honeywell
control for the power vent and the gas valve. The water heater should
last 10-12 years.

It was blinking error 84.

The electronics package is a white plastic assembly that is attached with one
screw and two tabs to the gas valve/tank temperature probe assembly. Three connectors to power and sensors easily disconnect.

The connection to the gas valve is three pins that stick out of the valve assembly.

The assembly snaps apart with a screwdriver slid into...

• Re: Vizio SV320XVT

Thanks Scenic.

I pulled the TV apart and F1 (4A) on the Delta DPS-201EP A Rev 1 power supply is open.

I didn't open anything else up, I am guessing CN1 goes to the backlight and panel, and
CN3 goes to the scan conversion video input logic.

Thanks, Jim

• Some useful information about fuses...

I found this on the internet and thought that it might be of use to someone here. Dr. Leidecker works for NASA and wrote a NASA manual on fuses for spacecraft...

Dear XXXX,
I've done a lot of experimental and modeling work with the FM08 style fuses.

Each contains a nearly straight metal wire.

For currents ranging up to about 120% of the rated current, the link opens by
"creep...

started a topic Vizio SV320XVT

Vizio SV320XVT

My fathers Vizio SV320XVT died while he was watching it.

Now no power on. Any hints on where I can find a manual for this unit.

Any common problems with this model?

32" 1080P relatively decent when it worked...

I have not had the time to open it yet. And I haven't worked on a TV in
a decade or so.

Thanks, Jim

• Re: Mastec HY3005 not working

I just fixed a friends' HY3005-2.

Shorted 2n3055, no heat sink grease, just thermal pads contaminated at install with dirt.

Shorted 6a10 diode, open trace between diode bridge and relay section.

The previous technician that worked on the unit fitted a 2x larger than rated fuse and
popped the trace.

If someone has used the supply to charge model car/airplane battery packs the
protection diode on the front panel likes to short... (per other web forums)

A camera just arrived on my bench as a pile of parts.

Power supply problem... R26 let the smoke out for starters...

Does anyone have a schematic available? Or a hint on the value for
R26...

VRYL32P4C 125V 630 MA power supply module...
