• Re: Grundig 32 LXW 82-8600 DL (XLA194-03 PSU)

I've never had a NTC go faulty, but I suppose there is always a first time, eh? But I do see several small electrolytics in the same area, you could try heating each one individually with the tip of a soldering iron to see if one of them gets it running.

I have been tempted to buy one of those testers but not got round to it yet.
Usually yes, esecially if the board is unplugged from the rest of the set. Occasionally a capacitace reading will be wildly off what you might expect, in which case you will need to carefully desolder one leg. But I do not think it will tell you a cap is good if it is not, even in-circuit

It's over two years since I posted this, I had forgotten all about it! If you look closely at the image on the second post I have arrowed the offending cap (it's not very clear, sorry).
Despite the obvious differences, the power supplies do look similar in design, with an almost symmetrical layout. Do you have a capacitor (ESR) tester? If so it shouldn't be too hard to find the culprit. But from your image the component you refer to looks more like an inductor.

• LG LC550EQE. Tcon or display?

I was given this set to look at, being told it was displaying either grey or half/half balck/white (50/50 split).
I powered it up and sure enough it gave the 50/50 split, thereafter it only showed "grey" (ie backlights on but no image).
I disconnected the tcon board one side at a a time. Unplugging one side gave the 50/50 split, the other side gave half black, half vertical magenta stripes (see 3rd image). Unplugging it altogether gave grey (almost black) as above.
Apparently it's less than 5 years since it was bought and it doesn't look like it's had a lot of use...

• Re: Daewoo DT-42A1 not storing settings

OK, I found a universal remote, unfortunately it's the same if the set is put into standby - as soon as it comes back on again the tuning has been lost and the language selection comes up again

• Re: Daewoo DT-42A1 not storing settings

Hi R_J. There is a mains on/off switch on the set so yes, the same as unplugging it. There is no 'standby' button and also no remote (but I will try and set up a universal and see how that goes). It's the channel settings that is the most noticable/irritating (yes, still using analoge tuner lol!) but it's like it does a factory reset each time it's powered down as it comes on every time with the language selection menu - even after switching off for just a few seconds.

• Daewoo DT-42A1 not storing settings

A friend asked me to look at this old-school plasma set.
It runs fine, still has a good image considering its age but every time it is switched off (at the mains) it "forgets" all its settings.
I've had a good look around, was hoping to find a lithium or backup battery, or a storage capacitor but there's nothing obvious on the psu or main board.
Anyone had dealings with these? I know it's not worth a fortune but it would be a shame to bin it.
TIA....

• Another Sony, a KDL-40W2000 inverter cap's

I suspect this elderly set could be described as a coronavirus victim, as it has probably had more use in the last 6 weeks than in as many years!
"It was fine yesterday" was the comment from the owner, as if TV's are supposed to give some advance warning that they are about to die.
I was greeted with the 4-blink led code which I remembered was likely to be backlight related. It's a CCFL backlight so no open circuit LED's to look out for this time.
This particular set was assembled in Spain, I have noticed before that the soldering in Spanish-built sets leaves a...

• Re: LG 42LN5400 - No Backlight

Yes, this is correct. Remove the suspect LED and put a blob of solder across the contacts.
Bypassing one LED is unlikey to trip the protection circuit....

• Re: LG 42LN5400 - No Backlight

If you want to check your repair before spending ££ you could just short out the open circuit LED thus allowing the current to flow once again to the rest. (With it being at the end of a strip you might not even notice much difference in the image). If that works then you at least know that is definitely the fault AND you have the use of the set until the new strip(s) arrive - if you don't mind opening it all up again.
Be VERY careful not to nip any edges when replacing the screen back into the frame!

• Re: Sony KDL46W2000 3 flashes, now no remote.

Apparently the 3 flash error (which it no longer does) refers to a fault in the unregulated 10.5V line. It sits around 11.6V while the set is starting up then it rises to 12.something. All other voltages on CN02 seem pretty good too.
But after being left unplugged for a while it is still a bit sluggish starting up. The relay will click 2 or 3 times ( a few seconds apart) and eventually the backlight kicks in and it will run happily thereafter, but still no response from the remote. I cannot even get it into 'red LED' standby, although...

• Sony KDL46W2000 3 flashes, now no remote.

A neighbour and friend asked me to look at this dinosaur. He's had it since new, about 15 years he reckons and it will have had a lot of use in that time. Though it is no longer the 'primary' TV in the house, it is in the bedroom, but his wife is practically bed-bound so it does a long shift every day. Did.
Apparently it has been taking longer and longer to come out of standby until the other day when it would not start. He remarked the the red standby LED was flashing instead of turning green.
As occasionally happens, he went to show me the symptoms and it came on - albeit with...

• Re: Samsung One Connect Bn94-07687b Fried?

Many thanks for all the suggestions guys.
I wasn't present when the connections were being made but I would think it unlikely in this case that anything was powered up as the chap was taking the opportunity to tidy up the jungle of cables (which I am sure most of us are all too familiar with!) so would most likely have had the power unplugged at the time.
But the other suggestion of a worn (perhaps shorted?) HDMI cable is more plausible as he does have a habit of swapping things about a LOT.
I don't have the...

• Samsung One Connect Bn94-07687b Fried?

I had just rescued this HU8500 TV by replacing the inverter board, the previous one(s) having succumbed to a strange moisture issue covered in another thread. (https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?p=953619#post953619)
A friend was desperate for a "decent" TV so he took it away and even rang me back later in the day to tell me how thrilled he was with it.
Sadly the elation didn't last. The following day (now that he was satisfied it was a worthy replacement for his old Panasonic) he wired everything in more 'permanently', hiding the spaghetti-style wiring...

Does it behave like this on all inputs?
What happens if you have the TV's menu displayed? Does that disappear also?
And does it get better/worse as the set warms up?

• Re: Samsung UE65H8500 wet inverter board

Update: Well the new board arrived, I fitted it along with an alternative insulating layer between it and the LCD backplate and the set fired up no problem.
I left it on most of the afternoon playing 4K Youtube videos before buttoning the back on hopefully for the last time.
Having already had it in my own living room, a unanymous decision was reached by the other half that it is too big!
A friend had expressed more than a passing interest in it so he took it away and rang me later on to tell me how thrilled he was with...

It's definitely not that rubbery stuff that goes sticky, it's quite a firm card.
Good call re. ESD bag, it's just the sort of thing I don't throw away so I may have one kicking about somewhere.
I've just moved house/workshop so my stock of "things that might come in handy some day" is at an all time low right now - hence the binning of the old inverter board .

• Samsung UE65H8500 wet inverter board

This apparently 'dead' set was given to me to "have a look at" but the owner had already replaced it so wasn't much interested in getting it back. Nice!
Almost immediately after plugging it in I could hear the speakers popping quietly so presumed something was overloading the power supply causing it to trip.
After finding a large piece of foam for the bench (I didn't fancy laying a curved screen on a flat hard surface) I took the back off & looked for any suspect cap's etc. but there was noting obvious. Unplugging the inverter board appeared to bring the set to life,...
