    Hi!
Just wanted to give you some news. After much thinking, I bought the BN44-00173A power board. I loved this screen too much to throw it away without trying it first.
The board arrived today, I changed it, tested the screen, and it was bright white. At least there was some improvement. Clearly I had a faulty connection somewhere, and it was the flat multicolor little plug (I had no idea what it was for but it was so weird I figured it has something to do with the image signal). After unplugging it and plugging it again, tadam! My screen...

So, I finally put the screen back together without trying anything because let's face it, I have no idea what I'm doing. Now the blue button is solid, and I can't get any image. I tested it for a few hours, I guess I messed up something when I tried to test the components and by handling it.
Do I take the risk and buy a new power board, or do I just give up? What do you thing? It's around $65 where I live, should I do it? Solid blue button means the problem is with the power board, right?
    Thanks for all advice...

Oh Gosh, now I'm super frightened... What is the piece I absolutely shouldn't touch? If I put it on a cushion, is it ok or should I put it on something else, like a wooden table? Sorry for all the stupid questions, but I'm really new at this

    Hi!
Sorry to dig up the thread, but my screen is open on a cushion next to me and I'm still hesitating on what to do with it. Is there something I can do to test the power board without reassembling it? Would it be possible (and not too dangerous) to plug it in while it's not connected to the screen? It might be way easier to test the circuits that way.

Okay, guys, I'm finally back. I took forever, in the meantime I moved to another country, so lots of things to do. I got the multimeter, the screen is disassembled, I also disassembled the power board to recheck it in case I missed a bulging capacitor, I took some new pictures just in case and then remembered I already took all the pictures and attached them last year.
Now I'm hesitating : should I reassemble everything except for the back panel, prop it on some books and wait for it to go black again, or is there something I could check right...

Oh, I have too much work right now to take care of it and I need to buy the multimeter anyway. But I'll do the books thing, I was thinking about something like that. I'll come back here once I'm ready with my brand new multimeter and my screen open on the table
Thanks a lot for your quick replies.

(my neighbor's multimeter didn't have the farads, so I couldn't test the caps. I'm going to buy one that's a bit less lame. Also, I might need to get myself a new soldering iron, mine is 40W and takes ages to remove a single solder)...

Ok. Can I do that with any multimeter? (I'm gonna buy one, so I might as well choose the right one)
I'll have to find a way to get the monitor on without the back panel on it (thing is, the back panel is the only thing holding the boards together, so I cannot put the monitor in any other position than face down (which is not that great when you want to see if it's working or not))

And now it's working again (VGA connection). Because it makes total sense. *sigh*
Ok, so at least it's not dead.

How to I do that? I need to buy a new multimeter, the one I borrowed is really basic (and I gave it back anyway, so right now all I have is a soldering iron).
Also, to check it when it's working and not working, I have to disassemble the screen again? (not sure I can use it when the back panel is not screwed in, that's also why I reassembled everything)
I think I can get a new multimeter for the end of next week.

Edit : Ok, I'm pretty sure the screen is in a worse shape than before, now. It's never stayed black for that long....

    Hi!
Sorry for not coming back sooner. I plugged in the iPad in VGA connection, and it worked flawlessly for hours. I was pretty sure either it was fixed, either the problem was with the screen's dvi plug (which I could totally live with).
Today, I plugged the screen in dvi mode to my computer. After about 5 minutes, the screen flickered, and then went dark. I tried the flashlight thing, I can't see an image.
I tried the iPad in VGA mode again, and nothing. Black screen. Blue led is steady, not flashing. I tried changing the source...

Ok, good news is, the screen still works. I actually put it back together entirely, right now it's sitting next to me, plugged to my iPad so that I can have a constant image and be ready with my flashlight when the problem occurs. Desk is getting a little crowded right now with the three huge screens and the ipad ^^

Yeah, I saw it, thanks! Might come in handy if I end up trying to replace the caps on the board.
There is indeed an inverter board. And no, the screen doesn't flicker at all. I can try the flashlight thing, I'll first put everything back (except maybe the back panel, no use putting everything back together to disassemble it right after) and try it.
What I meant by cable was the DVI cable from the computer. I unplugged it from the monitor and tried it on my other monitor when the screen went black. The other screen showed the image. When...

Ok, resistors are back on. I need to ask my neighbor for some solder because I can't find mine (and it's past midnight here, so it will have to wait until tomorrow). I took a few pictures. I tried to take the rosin off, but it's really, really hard, and I fear it might damage the capacitors.
The stuff is yellow, and isn't darker in any place....

    Hi!
I have the BN44-00195A too, and I too am looking for some answers... Can't find anything about that board, and most of all, mine is covered in yellow rosin, I can't even read the value on the capacitors...
My screen is behaving a bit differently : it works. And then, it shows a black screen, sometimes just for 1 second, and then it works again. And then, suddenly, it's black for 10 minutes (or more), and then the image comes back. Sometimes it's when I switch it on, sometimes it's after a few hours...
    The power button is acting...
