Got this 47" tv a while ago. It powered up and I saw the W logo on the screen so I bought it for 15 dollars at the recycler.
Finally got around to looking at it today. Powered it up and hooked up a source to it. The colors were off. It was like looking at a 3 gun RPTV that has the alignment of the guns off so you end up with that weird wrong colors and so on. Even the colors in the menus weren't right.
I then tore it apart and looked at the mainboard and the power board. Everything looks good. No leaking caps or anything. I didn't touch either of the boards on...

Re: Can I safely bypass the standby board?, RCA L32WD12
Well I jumpered the 110ac to the mainboard and sure enough, nothing. So the bypass board is probably fine. I had replaced 6 of the bigger main caps that were obviously failed. I will desolder the rest of caps. test them, and have my friend with magnifiers examine the board for obvious problems.

Can I safely bypass the standby board?, RCA L32WD12
I am repairing a L32WD12 RCA tv. I already replaced the 6 caps in the main power supply that were obvious bad but the TV still only shows the red standby light and won't fully power on.
There is a small standby board in between the main power jack and the power board. The little board has a couple of capacitors and relay and other electronics on it. The red/white 110v go directly to that board and then from there to the main board. I assume that the standby board shuts off power to the main power board to save electricity.
My main question is it okay to directly...

Re: HP 2509m won't turn on, no power to ON/OFF LED
Thanks for this thread. I just got a 2509m monitor at my recycler with the same symptoms. No power, no led, no nothing when plugged in. Looked like it was in beautiful condition though so I snagged it for 5 dollars.
I was disappointed when there were no blown caps on it though. LOL But at least this thread is like roadmap how to fix this monitor.

Should I buy a VP50 Vizio Plasma for 50 dollars?
Its a gamble, but should I take it? My local recycler has a VP50 Vizio 50" plasma tv for 50 dollars. It has a power light that goes orange when plugged in and when you hit the power button, it turns green but no picture.
I used a flash light and can see several blown caps on the board near the top middle of the tv through the vents.
I might be able to get it for 40.

How do diagnose Samsung 215TW monitor?
I have a pair of Samsung 215TW monitors. They both had bad caps. I replaced the caps on power board 1 in monitor 1 and tested it. Turned on and then back light shut off right away.
I replaced the caps in power board 2 and tested it in monitor 1, same problem, back light turns off.
I then put repaired power board 1 into monitor 2 and tested it, monitor 2 works flawlessly with power board 1. I then swapped repaired power board 1 with repaired power board 2 and tested monitor 2, still works flawlessly.
Tried testing both of the power boards back into monitor...Last edited by bobotech; 04-11-2014, 05:17 PM.

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
Does anyone know if the Dimension series of computers are being affected? i haven't seen any dead Dimensions but we have a fair amount at the university that I work at (roughly 100-200 or so). The ones we have are Dimensions 4500-4900 models that I am aware of.
I haven't seen any bad caps on those models or really had any issues with them but I want to be aware if there could be an issue.

Can I get away with...
...using 6.3 volt 1500mf caps in place of 10 volt 1500mf caps on an old msi ms-6300 motherboard?
There are 3 of them on the edge of the board and I have 4 spare 1500mf/6.3 volt caps that I bought from you a while back.

Also i'm not sure of the name of the caps but they look like it says Lysol or something like that. Counterfit?

Indeedy!!
He dropped the computer off at my work (i wasn't there) and called me up a few hours later. While we were on the phone, he was describing the problem, i realized it might be bad caps so i went and opened the case and found the dead ones.
I told him on the phone that he had a bad mobo with bad caps and I never even bothered powering the system up. I just tore it apart and took the mobo out. He's just going to buy a new mobo/cpu combo to replace the xp2400/ak77 in there now (he didn't want to worry about waiting for the cap kit to be delivered) . He just said...
