• Re: IBM 8187 P4 2.8Ghz

Hello all, I replaced the one bad cap and it has no effect on the MB at all. Any more ideals before I waste time and caps replacing the other ones?

The soldering is not bad at all, I just heated one leg titled it did the same to the orther and then used some wick on both sides of the hole and it came perfectly clean

  • Simple Question 4nf 400nf

This might be a stupid question but I can't find an answer online. I have a multimeter that test's caps (Craftsman 82175), it's got two ranges for cap test's 4nf or 400nf. I don't what that is in Uf.

I need to know what 4nf is in UF and what 400nf is in uf? I assume 400nf would test the larger 1000UF caps? What ranges of UF caps can I test in those two NF's?

  • Police Scanner time delayed problems.

I hope this is the right place to post this, feel free to delete or move if not correct.

I have a Realistic Pro 2021 200 channel scanner it's old I bet in the late 80's, it's just like this one in the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7loVEiktnw

No one has done any mods to it. Not my vid.

The problem that I am having is the scanner will work good for two/three days left on all the time, then it will start picking up just noise and static on the local police feq. then if I turn it off and leave it off overnight it will work fine again static...

  • Re: IBM 8187 P4 2.8Ghz

Thanks for the good info, I collect the 1st IBM PC the 5150, So I thought I would add IBM's last PC before they sold to Lenovo.

I have one system that works fine, but for how long I don't know. This one I picked up because of the price and having bad caps, I have replaced caps in LCD's ect. No problem, I thought just stick in some caps. But after looking this form over I thought maybe it would turn in to a PITA.

I only have these for collection purposes, as much as I hate to say I am not a fan of IBM's later stuff either. Every one...

  • Re: IBM 8187 P4 2.8Ghz

OK I just placed the order for other caps. They should be on there way. I stuck with the same voltage 10V, just because I have been told "Replace with the same" over and over again.

Now for the desoldering part, what's the better way a wick/braid or a sucker?...

  • IBM 8187 P4 2.8Ghz

I picked up an IBM 8187 2.8Ghz 512 40gb for $4.97, from a scrapper. It was sold at not working. These IBM systems have some kind of plug in (when you plug it in the wall) self test, it will fire up the system, the hdd will spin up and all fans, basically a full power up. On a working system, it will shut down until you power it on. However on this system it will just stay running and not answer to the power button and will display no video. It only has one visible bad cap, a 10V 1500UF next to the AGP slot with a bulged top. There is two more of the same caps but look just fine. I ordered new...

  • Re: How long caps last 27 years?

I went ahead and toke this one all the way apart, I toke my DVM, set on 2000K. The two big caps started at 0 and the numbers started going up pretty quick... On the group of 5 caps over by the heat sinks all of those started at and stayed at 0 got to 5 at the most. My knowledge is very very limited in the subject. But from what I have seen online the two big caps are good because that means they are charging and one or all 5 caps are bad because it's at 0 like a wire? This was done on the board nothing removed. The one cap at the bottom edge of the...

  • Re: How long caps last 27 years?

All caps appear to be Marcon and Nichicon. The two large caps are 220Uf 200v.

I have no ideal on there past use, this PSU (in the photo) has seen tons of use, the one I am asking about is a low use system. Don't think it saw much use at all....

  • Re: How long caps last 27 years?

The system only see's 2 hours of use every two months, just to keep the caps "healthy" The caps in the PS are rated for 105C don't know there temp but they must stay cool big PSU case and a fan right on top of them. Don't know the ripple or how to test it?...

  • How long caps last 27 years?

Hello, I have a power supply that is 27 years old from 1984. I was wondering if it would be worth while to go in and re cap the entire power supply to protect the computer system and power supply, I see notes online that when the caps go it takes a lot of other parts with them. The system and power supply work fine. Would I be asking for trouble or would it be good maintenance? Thanks for any input. It's an 83 watt SMPS in an old IBM 5150pc.

  • Re: Samsung SyncMaster 226BW (replacing caps with newer versions?)

I agree stick to normal Electrolytic Caps, If I get another three years out of this display (I just fixed my 226BW) I will be happy, that's three years longer then most LCDs ;-)...

  • Samsung 226BW Flickering/ Don't Be Scared

Just wanted to post here my story in hopes it might help someone or help some newbies feel better about approaching a repair.

I have a Samsung 226BW 22" Widescreen LCD it's about 3 years old, it started flicking when it was turned on, the screen would flash black then back to my desktop over and over again, until it warmed up. Research on the net confirmed it's a common problem, and said I needed new caps. So I said I really really like this display and don't have the money for new one, so I am going to try to fix it. I was scared to do it, and I shouldn't have been, I was...

  • Vintage IBM Power Supply Trouble

The IBM 5150 is a vintage computer from 1981.

The other day I turned on my 5150 for the first time in about a month or so. It powered on fine ran for about 25 minutes. Then it froze up and I turned it off waited about 30 seconds turned it back on. I was greeted with a crunching sound and an odd smell, no pops or anything like that. It never turned back on. So I removed the power supply from the case toke off the cover. I don't see anything really that "looks" bad. The power supply will give a short burst of power maybe a second or two then it's dead again? Any ideals?...
