Emotiva UMC-1
I have had my Emotiva UMC-1 surround processor for about six years. Suddenly it won't boot up anymore. Has anyone else had this experience?

Re: Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner
I didn't record the voltage. I think it was a little over 5 volts. However, the ripple was substantially more - about 60 mV. Both times the voltage was measured with the control board out of the air cleaner, i.e. no load on the triac.

Re: Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner
Success! I replaced C3 and am now getting 5.1 VDC with about 5 mV of ripple. I seems our forum is well named. Bad capacitors have been the cause of two of my electronics problems and probably more. I have now run the air cleaner for over an hour without shutting down. Thanks to everyone for all their thoughts, effort, and advice.

Re: Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner
Thank you all for your suggestions. I can't see the motor, but I presume that is the correct one since it is the replacement part for the AFS-1000B. I think the motor is all right since I ran it for over an hour with the board jumpered out. I just measured the -5V power supply voltage. It does indeed measure 5 volts with about 60 mV of ripple. Of course this is with no load on the board. This may not be surprising since the blower always ran when started. It just does not run for long when powered by the board. I, too, am suspicious of C3 since the...

Thanks for the suggestion. However, the overload is not tripping. It almost seems as if the controller was getting a shutdown command. But the operation is not random. It is very consistent.

Re: Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner
Sorry to be gone for so long. I have not had much time to work on it due to other pressing problems. I did manage to remove the control board and jumper the motor directly to power. It works fine in this mode so I'm thinking the problem is in the board.

Re: Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner
Thanks for all your responses. I don't have any photos yet but will post them as soon as I do. There is a thermal overload switch on the unit but it is not tripping. I did find a data sheet and circuit diagram for the controller IC but it may not be the same one you are referring to. The one I have is at .
I found someone on another forum who was having the same problem. He solved his by replacing the whole circuit board. I was hoping to be able to repair the one I have since it seems to be in good shape. I think the controller IC is...

Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner
I have a Jet AFS-1000B Air Cleaner. It has a three speed blower and a remote control. It has a CP8112B-L8SN24 controller and BT139X-600F triacs on the output to the blower. I usually run it on the lowest speed. Recently, it started shutting off after running for only a few minutes. If I restart it immediately, it will run for only a few seconds. If I wait a while, it will run for a few minutes again before shutting off. Could a failing triac cause it to operate this way? The remote control and all the speed and timer functions seem to work fine. The control board is powered up all the time even...

Re: Cyberpower PR1500 won't charge battery
Success! I installed the new batteries yesterday and everything is now working. Thanks to everyone for your help and especially to Budm for the accurate diagnosis that C40 was the cause of the malfunction. My total cost for parts and shipping was under $90.

Re: Cyberpower PR1500 won't charge battery
Good news. I got the replacement capacitors the other day and installed them yesterday. The charging circuit is now working well; charges up the battery whether the UPS is on or not. The batteries are not good any longer however. The deep discharge must have finished them off. I have ordered replacements.

Good news. You nailed it. Replacing C40 allowed the battery charging circuit to function again. I am now getting 55 Volts on the battery leads. It must have been ESR since the capacitance didn't seem that different from a new one. What function does C40 have in the switching regulator? It must be critical for ESR to have that much effect.
I am now replacing C44, C45,and C47. The bad news is that I ordered the wrong 100uF, 63V capacitors from Digi-key. They are too big to fit in the space provided. Neither...

I have not replaced C40 yet. I wanted to make sure that that was still the right thing to do. I will go ahead and do that as well as C44, C45, and C47. This will take me a little time because the capacitors are hard to remove. I will get back to you as soon as I have replaced them and reinstalled the board in the UPS.

I got the replacement capacitors for Digi-key yesterday and started replacing them today. I first removed C40. After removing it from the board I checked it with an ohmmeter. It seemed to check OK. The resistance first measured a short and then climbed toward infinity (>2Mohm). Could it still be bad or could something else be wrong?

Thanks for all your suggestions. I, too, thought I could trace the battery charger circuit back from the output to find the malfunction. However, I only got as far as the output capacitors. There was only one small trace from there, leading to a small transformer which didn't make any sense. This is a difficult board to trace because all the traces are covered by a protective layer and covered on top by components. And, no, there was no fuse under the transformer. I didn't find any sign of a fuse under any transformer....

Re: Cyberpower PR1500 won't charge battery
Thanks for all your helpful replies. I especially appreciated the schematics. However, my UPS is a PR1500, no suffix. It is designed for 120VAC input and has 6 NEMA 5-15R outlets. I don't know if the schematic is the same. I have been studying the schematic for the charger parts but could not figure out how the 55 Volt charging voltage is generated. 120 VAC input should generate about 168 VDC across C2 and C3. I couldn't figure out what happens after that. After a lengthy search of my circuit board I was not able to find D17. C1, which...

Re: Cyberpower PR1500 won't charge battery
Thanks for your replies. I understand that batteries don't last forever. However, they seem to be taking a charge and holding up fairly well. I now have them charged to 48 volts. I don't want to invest in new batteries if the UPS won't work. If I can get the UPS back to working, I will consider buying new batteries.

Cyberpower PR1500 won't charge battery
I have a Cyberpower PR1500 UPS that has been working well for about ten years. The other day we had a power outage. The UPS failed to supply power. When the power came back on, the unit failed to come back. It was absolutely dead. Pushing the "ON/OFF" button did nothing. When I found out that most UPS units will not operate if the battery voltage is too low, I checked the battery voltage. It was about 34 volts instead of 48. I removed the battery pack and charged it up to about 46 volts. I put it back into the UPS and pushed the "ON/OFF" button. The unit came on and showed...
