Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display
Can someone point me to how to wire up the four wire probes please? There's five wires going to the DIN socket and I'm confused!

Re: 0 Ohm ESR ?? - Testing cap in PSU
So you think that because it says zero ohms ESR, that it might actually be infinite instead and therefore the cap is bad ? Is that what you mean by 'out of range' ?

0 Ohm ESR ?? - Testing cap in PSU
Hi...
I'm attempting my first ever SMPS repair and I'm testing a cap that would give me the symptoms I'm getting if it was faulty.
I have one of those cheap 'TC1' component testers that tells me the 1000uF cap is 941uF but has a zero ohm ESR (removed from the board).
Do I believe that ESR reading ? Is the cap shorted ? How do I confirm whether it's good or not if I can't trust the component tester ?
Many thanks !
Kev.

What kind of desk lamp / magnifier do you use ?
Hi.
I need to get a bright desk lamp for working on PCBs and I'm wondering what is considered the best type to get for this kind of work ?
I see there are a lot of magnifier type lamps with ring lighting, but the magnification is usually only 5x, which I don't think is going to be enough for SMD work, though it might be OK for larger components / general use.
There are also the long LED strip kind.... which seem like they might be good.
I think that either way, I want to go with a swing-arm type ('anglepoise' type) rather than a gooseneck...

Re: Toshiba S50-A-10V (PSKK6E-00M00DEN) Schematic request please
A-HA! I see !
Thank you @Piernov !
I have found a Board View file for the VGSG-GS 2.1 motherboard which is similar, but not the same.
I think the similarities are close enough for me to find this file helpful.
Is this a common practice among board makers - have several boards all based around the same design ?

Hi,
Does anyone know where I might get a schematic for this Toshiba laptop please ?
This is my first attempt at a laptop board !

Re: Reebok GT40s Treadmill power supply issue?
I gave up all pretentions of being able to fix it myself and sent my board to a chap in Rhyl; https://www.treadmilldoctor.co.uk
It cost me £69 Inc postage and he sends you a bottle of belt oil free with your repaired board. Apparently, 75% of the time it's the 24pin chip. It contains the program code for the treadmill so save your time trying to locate a replacement - even if you found the right microcontroller, you'd never get the code.
Mine is working fine now. For anyone who has this problem,...

Re: Reebok GT40s Treadmill power supply issue?
I haven't had a chance to look at it again yet, but you mention on-board testing of diodes & resistors... How does that work ? How can I test a diode, for example, without lifting one leg ? Likewise, resistors aren't going to read their actual values if they are in a circuit are they ?

Re: Reebok GT40s Treadmill power supply issue?
Hi. I have the exact same treadmill with the exact same fault ! (Well, the symptoms are the same - instead of powering up, it pulses about twice a second, as if the PSU is cycling).
Have you got any further with yours ? I'm going to take a look at the diode you mentioned on mine.

Technosonic LCD3251 Display Garbled
Hi,
I have a Technosonic LCD3251 HD TV and the display is garbled. The OSD menu is also garbled.
I've already done some googling and apparently there are several common faults with this model. I'm just wondering if anyone here has seen this before and can say something like "Yeah - I had one exactly like that - try replacing C122 on the main board" - before I take it down the dump !
I've videoed the display and you can see it in all its glory here:-

The only other thing I can add is...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hi, I'm Kev and a computer / network engineer. I hate seeing people throw good electronics away just because of a simple fault - or worse - because they've just bought the latest all-singing model and can't be bothered to give the old one away to someone who might appreciate it !
I'm always scouring ebay for broken bits n' bobs and although I'm not an electronics engineer, I can poke my way around a schematic and have managed to successfully repair several bits of kit using little more than a DMM and a helpful...
