Wrong? No. Understatement? Yes, I'll admit to that....

    Possibly just bad tab bonds?

    My wife would say "Yes!"

Now I've got the 52" wall-mounted in my wife's sewing room and the 46" parted out, I'm down to 2 in our family room now from 4 (including the one mounted for our primary viewing), and she still thinks that's one too many. ...

How do you go about rain soaked bin finds in the UK? We don't get much rain in this part of the Americas (and it's getting to be less each year!), but I do tend to avoid dumpster diving in the days following a rain storm, because I don't want to bother tearing a set apart and drying it all out first before I can even try to fire it up and see what might be wrong.

Why not replace C102? I've seen you do that before, along with a cap on the other side of the board. Too fiddly?

  • Re: What tv brand do you most common repair ?

We're fairly new to LCDs in our household, and I do most of the cleaning (being as her indoors is rubbish at it), but I did decide recently to give the wife "the talk" about not spraying anything directly onto TV screens, and that if she was tempted to use a damp cloth to make absolutely sure it was barely damp and not in the slightest bit "drippy"....

That makes me sad...my two favorite TVs (LG)...one is a late 2011 and the other an early 2012. But I bought them both pre-owned (so about half of what was retail). The older one I've had for about 2 years now and is up to about 9,500 hours. It runs around 15-16 hours a day, continuously. The newer one I've only had for about 4 months and it's maybe at about 4,500 hours. It runs about 12 hours a day, continuously. So far, so good, though I do keep an extended warranty going on both, just for the hell of it.

  • Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

Well this one is taken care of. I shimmed both end tabs with a piece of this stuff, triple folded to give it the right girth:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/111642792448?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l4467&_trkparms=gh1g%3DI111642792448.N19.S2.M-7840.R6.TR7

I can't say I'm all that crazy about the material - it compresses down a lot, and once it gets a bit of heat on it feels a bit more like putty than foam. It did the job though, and the right side tab appears to be completely fixed. I found that...

Just a small point to potentially save you some headaches in finding a replacement...you're not looking for a "main board" - in TV parlance that would be the one with the video and audio connections on it....

  • Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

After having it on for a while, I noticed a second tab bond acting up - the one on the very left side this time - manifesting itself as a single vertical line of turquoise pixels that, again, can be cleared easily by giving the rear cover a thwack....

  • Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

I didn't mention it earlier, but I went dumpster diving at BB again and found a somewhat neglected looking LN52A750, mostly from the way the Geek Squad guy handled it than anything else. I know they consider these trash, but I do wish they'd quit dragging them around on the ground once they've got them out of their trucks! Of course, it's also missing the stand and remote.

I was hoping for an easy victory from this one, and am pleased to find what is almost certainly a single bad tab bond. Didn't even need to take it apart...

Same deal - 850 in the 46" size; 2009 model; top right hand side. Spooky.

Starts out pretty bad when cold; gets better when it gets some heat off the TV and after a bit of massaging by me, but I can't clear the last bit (about 3 lines of pixels worth).

Even so, I reckon my chances are pretty good with this one once I've got it torn down a bit further. Don't you guys?...

  • Re: Samsung LN46A850S no power

    Just to close this out...

Kind of a cop-out, but I ended up replacing the power supply board with one from Tri-State Module ($42 plus shipping). So that's one problem solved.

But...it appears that wasn't the only issue with this TV, and it looks like it's got classic tab bond issues. Not as bad as some I've seen - just appears to be one tab, maybe two, on the right side of the screen, and most of the artifacts actually went away by combination of the TV warming up and my flexing the frame. But I do have a couple of lines...

  • Re: Samsung LN46A850S no power

Poking around a bit more yesterday I found a capacitor that appears to be shorted. Let me replace it first and see if it doesn't solve the problem.

Edit: Well, that wasn't it...once the capacitor was out of the circuit it checked out.

Those markings on the back of the transformers appear to be "normal" - I found an eBay auction where the guy was kind enough to post photos of both sides of the board and his looked just the same.

  • Samsung LN46A850S no power

Dragged this out of the dumpster at the BB next door (thanks Geek Squad guy!). At first I thought it was going to be OK - appeared to try and power up and I heard the startup chime, but it didn't get there and eventually the standby lamp started a slow, steady blink.

Opened her up and checked for standby voltage per shop manual (5v on pin 27 of CN100 on main board), which checked out OK. Then I checked for voltage elsewhere on CN100 and there was nothing.

Then I disconnected the cable between the power supply board and the main board and shorted between pin 3 "Standby"...

  • Re: Sony Bravia XBR KDL-52XBR6 - Bad Panel?

Sorry to bring back a zombie thread...don't seem to be able to post a new thread to this area for some reason, even though I've had a badcaps login for years and years!

Anyway, a couple of days back I saw the Geek Squad guy at the Best Buy next door start putting detritus from his installs into the dumpster, including a LCD TV (which he obligingly left by the side of it). Once he'd vacated the area, I went to take a look only to find a rather nice looking 40" Sony XBR6. I knew there was a good chance of something being...
