  • Re: Gateway FPD2485W Problem

To answer a little more in detail on taking the FPD2485W case apart do this:

    1. Take the 3 screws out along the bottom back edge.
    2. Remove the 4 screws that attach the mount to the middle of the back.
    3. Now insert a thin screwdriver in the slot on one corner. There is a release here. Work with one corner at a time, push the screwdriver in and pry apart the case at the corner (this is the tricky part). When it separates a little, work your way down along the edge. There are 3 plastic clips that must be pushed in to release...

I don't have a picture of just the inverter, but the 6 plugs each have 2 wires that are both blue. I haven't checked to see if they were both hot. The little "danger" signs pasted on all of them worked with me ;-)

This is the first LCD I've worked on. But, there are 12 of those transformers(?) on the inverter that lead to 6 plugs which I assume are the lamps. So I guess the answer is 6.

I have not run the monitor for any protracted period, but it does radiate a lot of heat after just a few minutes operation. The fellow that gave it to me said the room it was in was noticeably warmer when the monitor was on.

The attached picture was taken prior to removing the caps. The 4 that are circled are all 125* C and located at the top of the ICB when the monitor is upright....

  • Re: Gateway FPD2485W Problem

Thanks guys. The problem I am having is obtaining a 125* C capacitor. None are listed at the DigiKey site (in small size & small uF) and the ones at Mouser are on order (should be in stock in 8 weeks). I would like to get all the parts from the same source so I guess I'll order a lower temp (105* C) substitute for now and replace them in 8 weeks. This unit runs HOT so I doubt lower temp parts will work over the long term.

I am considering installing a small fan on the back of the LCD case to cool the components by blowing air directly...

  • Gateway FPD2485W Problem

This is my first post, so thanks to all of you that share your expertise and information.

I have a Gateway FPD2485W that was given to me. Gateway replaced the original monitor when it went bad after 9 months, but the replacement worked one day and quit. The owner got the runaround and went out and bought a Mac. The replacement was in his closet for over a year and he just gave it to me. The problem is that it will work fine for some period of time (5 to 15 minutes) and then it goes crazy; basically a white screen which can have black or gray horizontal lines (or blocks) moving...
