Re: ratdude's main rig mayhem
Lots and lots of neon lights!!!!! They increase power 10 fold!!!!
Seriously, sounds great. Wow, and old LS120 drive! Haven't used mine in years. Was an awesome drive, and I loved the quick format of floppies for boot disks back in the day.

Re: Shoebox-pc
Just make sure you have a good metal backplate, and ground it to the power supply. All those metal rings on the motherboard where you put the screws to mount the board down are grounding points.

Re: PowerMac G5: No cold start
I have repaired many powermac with bad power supplies. I would always check that first.

Re: a good free defragmentor?
I have used jkdefrag in the past, works great, not very pretty though. Just recently tried Defraggler, and yes, I don't like it. Too slow, and not a lot of options.

White area on mobo indicates positive?
Ok, I am looking at a Asus A8N-VM CSM Rev 1.10GC, and all of the caps seem to be on backwards... All of the negative stripes on the capasitors are on the "non-white" area. the positive terminal of the capasitor is on the white half..... are they changing somethng?

Re: I'd like your opinions on this...
Check the voltages on the power supply with a voltage meter... That would be my first step.

Re: Linux penguin -- Best, comment, rage.
To search for linux, use "Linux Distros" That will come up with better search returns. Havn't ran Mandriva in years, but I love Ubuntu. Need to play with Slax.
Not a fan of dual boots, and windows an grub don't always play nice... Easist way is to setup a second box for linux/bsd, or run virtual box.

Re: Dual or triple firewalls?
Used to love IPCop, but they havn't updated in a while. IPFire is pretty good, lots of addons as well to add to the router for extra functions. For anybody who has an older working computer laying around, you can make a really fast, and solid router.

Re: USB TV Tuners
From what I have read, and could be wrong, you could only run 24 channels of video through usb as long as they are interleave, not full scan.

Re: USB TV Tuners
For standard resolution tv, usb is fine. Stick with Hauppauge they are one of the top brands.

Re: complete newbie help please
Wow... Look at the different vent caps... LOL
You would figure that somebody making, or inspecting those would see a light bulb come on... Gotta love sub standard work.
Post some pics of the rest of it, maybe somebody here can determine if it is worth salvaging or not.

Re: Laptop screen lines
Check to make sure that all the wires are still good on the cpu fan. If by accident, the signal wire isn't making good contact somewhere, the mobo may just be supplying full volatage to the fan, which means full speed.
You may also want to look in the bios for a fan speed setting, or fan monitoring for the cpu fan, and see if something went wrong there.

Re: IP address conflicts after waking up from standby/hibernation
There is an easier way to fix this.
In most routers, you can set the IP address via MAC address of a computer. That way, on some rare chance that something else gets on your network, it won't get your ip address because the router (DHCP server) is assigning the IP's, and it knows not to give away the IP set for your computer.

Re: Eeepc source code
Ubuntu Linux Netbook Edition is supposed to be pretty good. Especially if you are new to Linux.

Re: Laptop screen lines
You may want to go to radio shack, and gets some "contact cleaner" and spray some of the areas of the board, to really clean it. Just don't spray the screen with it. They even have a "contact cleaner pen" that really comes in hand for those hard places.
You can also use rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush if you want to do it on the cheap, just takes more effort.

Re: Can I store in a cellar?
Do you have any ventilation down there? As long as you have some good sealed windows, and a good sealed wall and floors, I say you should be fine. Just look for any nails or screws down there and see if they are rusting badly. That is a good basic way of seeing moisture damage. If it is cool and dry, would be a great storage place.

Re: Server 2003 OEM Licenses on Sale for Cheap
I have too many friends who do motor swaps. Everything in GM's ecu's can be disabled easily. The typical thing to do when you are dropping an LS1 into an older car is to disable the key security, and some other features which you don't use. Trust me, tracking in ECU, and in vehicles isn't there, or it would be all over the net. Too many people mod their vehicles for this not to be found. Most vehicles now are easily software modified. The older ECU's (OBD1) were all hard coded, and you had to physically change the chip inside the ecu,...

Re: sister withdraw
Don't do the dual boot, just install the XP Mode for Windows 7. Unless she needs anything with video acceleration, it should work fine. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspxRe: sister withdraw

D...oad.aspx

Re: Server 2003 OEM Licenses on Sale for Cheap
Manufacturers won't add gps to a car unless you paid for it somehow... still costs too much for them to throw it in there.
Plus, everything, including the ECU management is regulated, and the last time police tried to get "remote shutoff" installed in vehicles, people said "No", and it wasn't added. But, it sure would of been fun with a transmitter shutting down cars on the freeway... LOL
