  • Re: CMOS battery mystery

You will also find that with very few exceptions, the trace will most likely be buried on one of the layers you cannot visually inspect. Best you could do is make educated guesses about the components connected to that trace and use them to verify continuity.

  • Re: CMOS battery mystery

"Reset Configuration data" setting clears out stored PCI card / slot settings. I have not seen this setting cause a lose of clock or other CMOS settings.

I see you have tied other batteries in the board. I did not see any mention of that when I made my prior post. I find it unlikely they are all dead, but you did not say known good. Some systems are more picky than others about what state of discharge starts causing problems.

At this point I would suspect the circuit path to the CMOS may be open. If there is an external...

  • Re: CMOS battery mystery

Check the battery with a DMM that has a battery test setting. Most batteries (especially coin cells) will continue to show close to full voltage when tested with an open circuit. The battery test meters place a small load on the battery while showing the voltage.

If you do not have a DMM with battery testing capabilities, one of the cheap analog meters can be used, they tend to have a lower input impedance. You can also use a 330 ohm resister across the cell while measuring the voltage with a DMM.

When I'm working on a system,...

  • Re: ASROCK P4i65gV Prescott 800 Not booting

I just double checked the P4i65GV that I'm recapping. The silk screen is misleading, the original caps are installed properly on this board, the filled in side of silk screen is positive. I verified using my DMM to ohm from the ground pins on the main PSU connector to where the original cap negatives are connected; the capacitor can is not connected so you have to measure at the actual solder connection on the board.

I will post pictures of my recap and how to verify the polarity in the thread I started about this board...

  • ASRock P4i65GV killed by PSU Fuhjyyu's

I have an ASRock P4i65GV Prescott 800 Dual Channel DDR400 motherboard that became unstable after a few months being powered by a recycled Antec True550 PSU.

I just joined yesterday, and this is my first post to this forum. I'm an experienced computer software developer, with a background / hobby in electronics design and servicing. So this post is more to document my recap for others who may have the same PSU and motherboard.

I acquired the Antec True550 after upgrading a dual Xeon system for a client; they needed a proper EPS12V PSU for dual CPU upgrade. Thinking...
