• Re: What is the purpose of a fuse bulb

Ah, I didn't think about that. It deffinally doesn't come out with a good tug. Cut and splice was my next option but we were going to wait until the entire warranty is up (3 years on the lights, 5 years on the tree). I assume it's there for a reason so I don't want to jumper the wires.
One would expect better design for General Electric unless this is the "general" part of their electrical.
Although I know I wouldn't get an acceptable answer, when I asked the support person why they might have...

I can give it a try again but according to the instruction, this is not a removeable lamp and if I attempt it I will void the warranty...even though the warranty doesn't matter. I also did a slight attempt to pull it out w/o success.

Thanks for you quick response.
I sure can. The white ring signifies the fuse bulb....

• What is the purpose of a fuse bulb

Ok, so not exactly an "electronics" question but I think it still applies as a general question.

I have a GE Constant On Xmas tree and it appears as though they use a non-removable fuse bulb which is blown, which causes the entire row to fail. The plug itself has two fuse already.
Does anyone have any idea why a fuse bulb is required when the plug already is fused? It just seems like it doesn't serve any purpose and just adds on more failure point.

Thanks,

• Re: Second opinion on replacement caps

OK, so here is what I found. I'm breaking it up into what I currently need to replace (Have) and what I want to replace it with (Replace). I have stuck to replacement caps as close to the original spec as possible. All bad caps are OST.
Please give me your two cents.

Hehe. It stings but in the end, we're smarter so it's a win.

LOL. Well, if you're implying that veterans do need to worry about it, I would suspect newbs should worry more. I always worry more about what I don't understand but I suspect you're saying that unless you're creating complex circuits, something newbs aren't doing, they shouldn't worry about it. I'm just concerned since I'm repairing someone else's complex circuit.
As far as ripple, I have a very high level understanding of this and not very complete. I was just going by what I read in another thread on this forum...

Thanks!
I took your advice and looked up those caps.
For the 1000uf/10v/105c, it seems like both the Pan FC and UCC LXZ have a higher ripple than the Nichicon PW and a lower impedance. All are over the 520 ripple of the OST.
For the 100uf/16v/105c, it's pretty much a wash.

Now, I've read in other posts that a higher ripple is better. Please correct my if I'm wrong.
Also, I was to understand that upping the voltage would give the caps a bit more headroom. Since I've confirmed that the...

• Re: Second opinion on replacement caps

So, I have a few caps that I need to replace on a motherboard. These are OST's..

The RLG spec doesn't mention the impedance. Using math power (a gene I wasn't gifted with), is there a way to calculate this?
My plan is to replace these caps with higher quality ones as well as stepping up the voltage rating just to give myself a bit more headroom(IE: 6.3v to 10v). It seems that knowing the impedance would be important but I'm not sure if I should just take a guess and pull the trigger.
BTW: Caps I...

• Re: Bad Biostar 790gx Replacement for OST RLP 6.3 1000uf

So, I have that exact MB and popped a cap. I also noticed a bunch of bulging ones so I thought I'd go and replace several of them. I don't have an ESR meter, yet, but have been looking for some schematics to build one just to make sure they're all good but from what I read, the brands on this board aren't exactly quality and the price of a cap is nothing.
So, would it be over-kill to replace the caps with Aluminum Organic Polymer? Seems that I could match the specs (or at least what specs I can find of the OST and...
