  • Re: HP w2207h Intermittent Misbehavior - Follow-up

Several months have gone by without any trouble, but just a couple days ago the volume menu appeared and stayed. No buttons would do anything once this happened. Per blargg's info, I popped the monitor apart, removed the switch board and reassembled it. Everything is working fine and since I'm not concerned with any of the button functions, at least for now, I'm using it happily as is.

I did examine the board and switches, but can't find anything wrong. All the switches show 0/>1M ohms and work as designed. I actually...

    Thanks blargg,

I have been powering the monitor via an external switch for some time now and it has been running fine without any more troubles. If it starts acting up again, I'll dig into the suggestions you made. Thanks for the opening info. I actually didn't have too much trouble when I opened it originally, although my fingers also became a bit sensitive. I don't remember where I found the opening info back then.

I guess I missed the word "correct" in the OP's message. Of course, the correct way is to use "proper" load resistors and professional equipment....

  • HP w2207h Intermittent Misbehavior

What a beautiful monitor! (My first impression of it in use.) Of course that was after having it apart and before having troubles.

Background: A friend gave me this monitor because it was "acting up." I took it apart before even plugging it in. I found nothing of note in a pretty thorough visual inspection. So, I put it back together and fired it up. That's when I proclaimed what a great looking image it had. And, it worked all that night, leading me to believe it may have just needed internal attention.

However, the next day it didn't power up quite right....

  • Sanyo 32648 (DP26648) Repair Description

I see it's requested that repairs be documented as well as troubleshooting, so this is one I recently repaired without asking questions here:

Note: I added DP26648 to the title because the User's Manual does and leads me to the thought that maybe both sets use the same boards. If this is not the case, sorry to have misdirected any readers.

The trouble manifested as a red LED for about three seconds, then nothing, for three attempts. Then, nothing further until the set was unplugged, at which time I could get three more tries.

    Voltage checks showed 5VDC,...

  • Re: Sony KDL-26U2000 no response to remote

You may have already considered this, but maybe the remote isn't set up for that TV. Is it programmable? Can you borrow one with universal capability and try to set it up for that TV? Maybe someone has a DVD or Satellite Receiver remote that has a TV or AUX output you could try to program for your TV.

  • Recommendation For Capacitor Mounting Compound

Many of the Power Supply capacitors have a mounting compound, sometimes rubbery and sometimes rather hard. Is this for vibration damping or some other purpose?

What is the recommendation for a substance to use when replacing those cpacitors originally secured by a compound? Do you need to use something specific for electronics, or is an automotive high temp, sensor safe silicon OK?

What's the best and what's OK?

    Thanks...

(Sorry if this info was already available. I did search, but found nothing.)

    Thanks much.

Does the diameter play a critical role?

    started a topic MOV Replacement

    MOV Replacement

Time for me to query something:

Apparently, this set caught a surge. The Fuse and MOV on the left valliantly gave their lives to save it. As can be seen, there is a breach around the perimeter of the MOV on the left, which allowed the magic smoke to exit forcefully, staining the MOV on the right. I think the right MOV is still OK, but will probably replace it as well, for good practice. The one on the left was connected hot to ground and the one on the right was connected neutral to ground.

    But, concerns arise:

    1. the MOVs have different numbers and I can't...

  • Re: WestingHouse UW40TC1W wont turn on

Sorry, no manual, but here are a couple things to start with:

I can't tell for sure with the first picture, but one of the caps in the top right cluster looks like it might be rounded (bulged) on top. Look closely at the top of all the caps throughout the set and see if there are any that are rounded instead of flat on top, or, misshapen in a any way.

Then, do a thorough visual inspection of both sides of all the boards.

Finally, look for connectors that list the various voltages and see if those...

  • Re: Toshiba 42xv540u - no power at all.

No need to go further than the cord right now. If you don't have power on the end of the cord inside the set, then that's most likely the problem. As to checking it, you should remove the cord from power and check continuity with your meter on the lowest ohms scale. You should see a reading of 0 ohms for each side, measured between a plug pin and the appropriate connector pin.

The "funny round thing" is just a filter. Be careful if you make repairs to the existing cord. There is a polarity designation to the wires....

  • Re: Anybody with Ethernet knowledge?

I'm assuming (sometimes dangerous) that you want all the machines to be on the same network. If that is the case, it might be a better solution to only have one router assigning the addresses and opt for changing the other routers to act as switches. This would entail turning off DHCP in all the routers except the initial one, at the network source.

  • Re: Strange fault in Fisher FM-60 tuner

My first inclination was toward a cold solder joint, as well, but I see it mentioned at the end of your message.

I have also used the following two methods in similar situations:

1- carefully let a little of the freeze spray out easily, so you get a drop and catch it with a small tool. Then place the drop onto an active component, and then continue one component at a time.

2- tap lightly with a small screwdriver at some of the locations where the freeze spray worked. Be careful not to short anything....

  • Re: UPS - Tripp-Lite OMNIVS1500XL - No power when mains are disconnected

The first thing I would do is to safely find a way to measure the batteries in the following three states:

1- stable state - totally disconnected
2- charging/maintaining charge - installed, with mains connected and unit on
3- under load - installed, with mains disconnected and unit on

From here, I would evaluate whether the different sections were operating. With mains available and unit on, there should be a slightly higher voltage than the stable state across the...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hello from Northern NY. My background is television and radio electronics, but it is rather aged. Anyone here remember electron tubes? (I have some Radio Shack Lifetime Warranty ones. Do you think I can still get them replaced?)

More recently I've fixed a few computers, TVs and monitors, but most had visible defects or easily solvable troubles. I stumbled across this forum in my search for help with a recent acquisition and found the info here quite useful, so I joined to be able to see some of the other...
