  • Re: AC Adapter problem.

Ok thanks.. so which is a better way to test a PSU under load?

    Cheers!...

  • Re: AC Adapter problem.

I tried out the AC ripple test on another supply and it showed 41mv so guess it does work even on cheap multimeters. Got mine (VC99+) from Aidatek.com

I was wondering also.. how does one put a power adapter supply under max load to test it fully? I was thinking.. a 60w DC lightbulb at 12v would draw 5amps right? So if I have a 12v 5amp PSU then it should max it out and then I can get a accurate measurement of the voltage. But is there an easier way?

Cheers.. sorry if my question is nooby!

Yeah that's what I thought.. the cap is meant to stop ripple from AC conversion I believe.
So when a PSU ripples then its most likely a bad cap?

I will try setting it to AC next time but I'm looking up buying a Oscilloscope as we speak!

My tool kit is slowly growing into an expensive addiction.. lol

I have learned some things from this thread.. Many thanks guys! ...

Thanks Per Hansson. That is interesting. I didn't know DC voltage is supposed to ripple.
So does bad ripple mean a cap is failing to keep the voltage steady?

    Cheers...

Thanks for your help guys.. I'll atleast salvage a few bits from it but think the damage is too bad now.. I wish they didn't make things so shitty

OK I ended up cutting into it with the dremel. They had glued everything down.. the PCB as well. Ended up breaking a corner of the PCB. Pain in the arse. I'll just bin them in future unless they have screws!

  • Re: AC Adapter problem.

Thanks, I was thinking about testing it under load too. But a lot of youtubers seem to think its not necessary.
I will splice into the wire and connect croc clips then connect it back up and see how the voltage fairs.

I am really not sure how to get the thing open without drilling /cutting into it though.. is there a trick to it? There is no movement with the plastic and I can't get a knife inside anywhere.. it seems rock solid unlike the clip-lock types.

    Cheers...

  • AC Adapter problem.

Hi guys, I noticed one of my external hard drives was going on and off throughout the day. So I switched the adapter with another same drive and it worked fine, but then the other drive had the same problem.

    Western Digital MyBook 2.0 2tb
    The adapters are 12v@1.5a

So I hooked it up to my multimeter and the supply gives 12.23v constantly. I fiddled with the wire at both ends and shook it to see if the voltage dropped and nothing happened. So I think the cable and the tip are OK.

My question is.. what could be wrong if the multimeter says its...

  • Re: APC Smart UPS 1500

Battery came today so I'll try it tomorrow if I get a chance. I also built my esr reader on Thursday so I can test the caps as well if needed. Cheers

  • Re: AOC F22s (22" LCD monitor)

Ok will try this with my multimeter. Cheers!

Windows 7 and yes I used the AOC drivers. I have been working in IT since I was 19 so I know enough to have tried all obvious solutions.
I appreciate your suggestions though, nevertheless!
I just wanted to tell you that I am looking for a much more technical solution now after exhausting all of the easier ones.
However I am a beginner with electronics but am a very quick and keen learner. So all advice will be taken seriously with sincere...

Ah definitely not my graphics card.. If it was that easy I wouldn't have opened the monitor up hehe. It's definitely the monitor. my new monitor looks fine with that card apart from some ghosting which I'm sending it back for.
It started off just horizontal banding last year but now just a handful of the right shade of blue pixels causes what you see in the video.

I will try to see what you mean about the tabs Davi.P when I get home later. Cheers guys!!

  • Re: "Kemo" Electrolytic capacitors from Maplin

Not yet but I was going to buy one this weekend. Any cheap suggestions?

Yea saw that.. German company but I don't think they make them!!

    Good to know.
Yes I was thinking exactly the same thing about using them as temporary test caps before investing in good ones.
When I get them ill post a list of what I got! Never know might get some goodies.

    Thanks all!! ...

    Sorry about that..
I can't seem to upload via my phone either mate.. maybe they are too high resolution.
I will downsize everything later and see if that helps. Don't the Dropbox links work at all?
Is there anywhere else I can upload them which is more convenient for you?

    Cheers...

  • "Kemo" Electrolytic capacitors from Maplin

Has anyone had these caps before? There are no reviews on the Maplin site but bought a couple of "lucky bags" for testing purposes. Not expecting Rubycon quality but was interested because I can't find anything about them online. The company seems to be German.. but I suspect they are probably buying Chinese caps and relabelling them?

Asked a Maplin CC agent and they said they haven't had any complaints.. but with no reviews that sounds a bit bs.

    Cheers!Has anyone had these

  • Re: APC Smart UPS 1500

Oh what I meant was there are no "special" type UPS batteries.. they are just common wheelchair / motorcycle batteries with an APC sticker whacked on.

If this £25 deal works out I will be really thrilled! Even the old APC SmartUPS 1500 I have is still pretty expensive to replace. Still around £275 here plus delivery!

Any thoughts about my surge protection question? I was reading an article the other day about surge protectors only having a certain amount of "goes" before they stop being useful. So I thought...

  • Re: APC Smart UPS 1500

Wow thanks for the info guys. I read that great blog about the UPS batteries.. you should all read it if you haven't already! Thanks BudM!!
After following it, I was able to find a brand new battery for £25 on ebay with free delivery!!, and like the guy says on his blog.. it is likely just ONE unit that is dead.. so I can keep one of them and use the new one together with it.. if not I will find another somewhere else.

But apparently all these batteries are the same, regardless of brand name and I was right in my original post about APC...

  • Re: APC Smart UPS 1500

    Thanks for your reply!

I think the tone was like that yes. It lasted quite a while then went off and came back on an hour later or something. But the battery didn't work at all, and as soon as I cut power to the UPS it failed completely. No battery backup even for a few seconds.. that is what I find strange. So could it still be the battery or would that be the UPS itself?

I always expected it to sorta slowly die out until it couldn't keep the power up for more than a few seconds in the end.. not just a sudden death.
