  • Re: what is the correct way solder a coin battery?

Thanks for info, assume same principle for laptop power batteries which are also used in power tools battery packs. I replaced a dead cell in a powerpack for a handheld trimmers from with a laptop cell (same power specs), next time will just try heat resistant tape.
If done right a glue-gun might also work.

  • Re: What else have you guys been fixing !

A friend asked me to have a look at one of those he had replaced the key barrel as OAP lost key, after couldn't get it to go and no patience wrt electrics. I went there just to get the manual to read overnight, as never seen one before no idea what to expect, turns out just had to turn on key then press a button like an ignition button for it to work, thankfully as I didn't feel like playing with motors.

Sometimes fault-find car wiring and car electronics, sensors, but not into mechanics. Proper wiring of car trailers with LED lights (solder joints with heat shrink, no connectors unless in water sealed junction box, electrical conduit secures & protects wiring)

I repaired a frost-free Samsung Fridge/Freezer there's a thermal fuse inside near heating element which switches on periodically to remove frost from cooling element, after a time these will go, a limited usage lifespan in such temperature variance , took a while...

  • Re: Samsung kills off plasma in favour of 4K LED-LCD, Curved UHDTV

Yeah they were already caught with the others setting the price, EU ruling had to reduce prices, but I wouldn't think increasing plasma prices now would benefit them, if anything cutting the prices to increase output as sole supplier, ie produce to little not cost-effective nor cost-effective to over produce.

  • Re: zener tester

Built a simple one years ago for testing zeners from a blacklisted supplier, the only supplier (Arrow) that had that value. One of the production staff had to sit there all day testing zeners , felt sorry for them but they said is was relaxing. about a quarter were within tolerance. Anyway power supply a suitable watt resister (could just use a couple in parallel) and a bench meter does the job.

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hi, been on this site many times, and I don't join many forums anymore but finding real tech knowledge on the web is more often a succession of misses & 2nd hand misinformation.

I'm a electronics tech n' have been into electronics since I was about 10, taking apart radios. I 've worked in many fields but interest is more hobby than full-time pursuit.

I have self-learnt many tricks to fix stuff, anyway hope to add more to the site than I absorb.
