• Re: How bad are Ost caps realy?

I removed the one bulging OST and the motherboard started working but I see some ac ripple of .4 on 12VDC supply and it drops down to 11.25VDC. Its in specs but I think I will recap it all. Critical business computer....

Well I got a Shuttle SD31P here for repair, no power, was resetting and turning off irratically. Good chance a bad capacitor. It turned out all are OST and 1 OST 1000uf 10V is bulging but not leaking. There are 21 OST caps 1000uf or higher on this board. Looks like two hour job. So OST do bulge. ...

• Re: APC RS 800 Completely Dead

Hi, well you can never be too careful. I put the ups XS 800 back together after replacing Q40 and checked the checked the F1 current, 200-500 ma, good for a 2A fuse. It was runing when one of the fuse links blew. I took it apart and repaired the fuse link and put it back together. Then I plugged the battery in backward accidently. Boom there when the board fried, well at least it didn't cost me anything for the ups and only spent $15. I did learn alot about ups, just made a stupid mistake, you can never, never be too careful... The funeral was today...

Hi, yes it gets toasty, especially the big transformer, must be over 130 degrees too hot for a finger. Q40 is near two other identical MOSFETS but they don't get hot. The fuse is connected to the mosfet drain and is rated at 2A and was blown. I found a replacement in another forum and bought some from Digikey.
I am going to replace it as a precaution and see if it helps. Once the battery charges it not as warm too. The other 2 mosfet near it don't get hot at all. I ohm tested the mosfets and they seem ok. The IC11 is hot buts...

• Re: SmartUPS 700 will not turn on

Hi, APC won't power up if batteries are missing or too low on voltage. The relays are powered by battery. Its cheaper to replaced the batteries, that why they are replaceable. The UPS comes with lifetime equipment insurance policy, so just replace the batteries. I get SLA batteries on Ebay, 12V 7.2AH for $11 plus $5 shipping. Not made in Asia either.

• Re: APC UPS units - troubleshooting

HI, read this whole thread, and here is my advice and warnings:

1. Do not use a vented lead acid auto battery. They can leak sulfuric acid which removes skin and flesh and the battery gives off hydrogen, which is very explosive especially if you smoke.... Thats why indoor lead acid batteries are sealed and bubble out when shorted. Better to bubble out than explode or leak...

2. Its ok to replace 12V 7-7.5AH batteries with 9AH ones of the same size. You can't go up to much or the battery gets bigger in size.

Re: Quad-core died

HI, there is a quick way to reflash a bios chip, but you have to be very careful. It involves booting up to dos with good bios chip. Then carefully remove the chip if in square socket, and insert the bad bios chip, or if old bios chip set it on top of the old one. Then flash the bios, and you will have another good bios chip. Don't short anything out doing it or you might need a new motherboard.

• Re: APC RS 800 Completely Dead

Hi, well, I recharged my batteries in another ups, and replaced F1 fuse that was blown. Its started charging! I tested it by letting it run on batteries with my Oscope plugged into the battery backup. The battery went down to 24 from 27.5 after several hours. Then I plugged it back in and its charging up past 25 already. But I noticed that Q40, Mosfet is very hot, and the other mosfets are not. Also the IC11 12V regulator is hot too. F1 is very warm too, and its connected to the drain of Q40, and the other side of F1 is connected to battery ground....

Hi, Zoomer, sounds like your UPS is stuck in program mode. Program mode is entered by first turning off the ups, then hold the power button 10 seconds, which makes all led light, pressing one, yellow should flash, then press, red and yellow flash, press again, all red, red, yellow light up. check your power switch maybe its stuck down. It should have a distinct clicking when depressed. Other wise its in the power switch circuit. I could probably fix it. I got some schematics of the power switch....

Hi, ha did some more trobleshooting and read the labels on my XS 800 chips says RS 800. Even has a connector for the 10/100 option on the RS 800. So its the same board 640-0189D.

Hi, I read the russian forums about RS1000 schematics and they said to piece it together from 218 to 245, to me it looks very much like 218, 228, 231, or 232. Sorry about the huge pictures, if you resize them they look ok smaller....

Hi, I took your photo of the board, exactly like mine and blew it up and corrected the gamma level where the board number should be, and guess what? They either removed or moved the board number! Come to think of it, it might be the same number. After noting APC likes to just update the same board over and over. Please let me know where F1 fuse trace is thanks!

Hi, I noticed the difference between the RS 800 and XS 800, the RS has 10/100 surge protection jacks(2). So your board is not 640-0189D. Can you provide the circuit etched number? Its on the board top and bottom edge nearest the AC connectors. Hopefully with that number we will find the schematics on www.upsclub.org/schem, etc. The only difference will the the 10/100 surge protection probably. I noticed APC really believes in updating. Reading a schematic on there, was 1991, updated to like 2003. Thanks for your help.

Schematics are Proprietary

Question
Can I get the schematics for APC products? If not, why are they proprietary?

Answer
APC does not distribute schematic drawings of our products to the public. Our
schematics contain proprietary information.
Additionally, there are no user serviceable parts inside the UPS and
disassembly or modification of the UPS voids all warranty agreements. Only
internal APC staff and authorized service centers whose staff have undergone

Hi, Kraneshaft, after looking at your board picture, I have a XS 800 with exaltly the same PCB in it. Upon close examination I found the part number 640-0189D, which is the number on the schematics. You won't find the schematics on www.upsclub.org, they are all newer APC's except one from 1999 design. The schematics we are looking for would be 189D as labeled on that site. We may get somewhere with the board PWA number.
I checked it out and only found F3 blown, but exactly where is the F1 fuse(trace on board)? I found the batteries...
