Re: Enermax Liberty ELT620AWT
I'm the one on a ship. Our power is very good even on the non essential circuits - as good as utility power. No complaints from anyone depending on a 60Hz AC clock as far as keeping time.
We have dedicated circuits for computer power which are protected by ferroresonant technology. Power is very clean and well regulated and monitored by Dranetz monitoring equipment. If there is a mains generator issue the UPS system will engage and the flywheel system keeps power flowing until the backup generator starts. If there is a backup generator...

Re: Enermax Liberty ELT620AWT
RE: Zapping noise on startup.
I will tell you this. The (Liberty 620) was the ONLY "properly functioning" device that would reproducibly trip arc fault detection on circuits. I don't like that and it gets frowned at here.

Re: Enermax Liberty ELT620AWT
Is it possible to peek inside without taking off the cover?
I'll have to check to see if one of the bore scope lines will fit through the confines of the fan grille.

Re: Hazardous-voltage primer
I can tell you from experience first hand that the ring voltage on a telephone line is quite painful - when the wire is in your mouth.
The microwave is definitely lethal with 2kV at 500mA most common. Neon sign transformers at 15kV and 60mA are extremely dangerous. Put some caps across the output and the arcing is deafening. Ask any tesla coiler that's used a pole pig in reverse - stepping up 240v "house power" to 13kV or higher - often at currents over 1 AMP! Makes the lights dim in the neighborhood. Touch that and...

Re: Fake chip storm rocks China's science elite
I believe the motherboard brand was "Ocean" and "Octek".
I used to save everything but had to get rid of my "collection" as I am limited on stowage space where I live now. :P
I would not be surprised if they started faking heatsinks. (Solid metal bars instead of heatpipes!)
There's really cheap "shake charger" flashlights that have a piece that moves when you shake it but in reality there's no magnet and the "coils" are not connected to anything....

Re: Tantalums in place of electrolytics in vehicle ECUs
Even plain electrolytics blow nice when reversed. You can also take small ones and put them in a x-mas tree top. Remove the bulb, pull the leads of the cap through the plastic base and plug it back in. When they turn on the tree it's like a 21 shot salute.
It smells pretty bad though.
Another trick is to dike off the tips of the lamps (careful not to shatter the bulb envelope and the filament MUST stay intact) and fill it with pyrodex. Nice firecracker effect. Imagine a squibbed tree.

Re: Tantalums in place of electrolytics in vehicle ECUs
Indeed. I witnessed this firsthand with some weather instruments that were damaged from a direct lightning strike to our radar tower. When the CB's were reset, really bright white flashes reminscent of burning magnesium(!) were seen through the seems of the power supply chassis. It was those tantalum caps. They were secured with Torr Seal too! Amazing fire they put out....
