Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
My bad for using the wrong term. There will still be a power supply of some sort for the LED backlight, so that's my next target. Any clues as to what to check/test/look for would be appreciated.
Owner is not knowledgeable about those things, but it was in for service after the recall, so I'm assuming the fix was applied then (as computer will not start, no way to check). Even if it wasn't, the problem addressed by the BIOS update was with melting the power supply cable inlet...

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Tried running it naked (it, not me) with various stuff unplugged, no changes except: attempting to power up with the internal video cable unplugged makes the LED under the power button non-functional (all other LEDs remain the same).
But, a couple of things that may mean more to someone more knowledgeable:
In another thread, someone with video problems was told to take out the battery, unplug the power cord, and hold "Fn" + "Esc" while plugging cord in and pressing power...

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
After removing the heatsink/fan assembly and a generous (but not excessive) coating of paste, all shiny like factory-new.
I can try that next. Do I just reassemble the thing without that connected? I'm kind of shy of plugging semi-assembled stuff in, for fear of shorting everything out....

No. As excruciatingly minute inspection of the entire motherboard and everything else revealed no signs of damage (aside from one fin on the radiator that was about 15 degrees out of true), discolouration, abuse, mishandling, or overheating, is there anything in particular I should be looking for?Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Battery LED turned green from amber (manual says this indicates fully charged), but no change in response: press the power button, and power LED comes on for 1/2 second then goes out.
Back to the troubleshooting procedure from the service manual:
And if the computer doesn't turn on (which was the problem in the first place)?

No.
Pictures of those boards will tell you as much as pictures of these boards: there is no damage/discolouration visible to any of the boards or components (even with a 5x loupe).
Yes, as detailed in this response.

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Brick is warm (that tells me power is going through; as nothing is sparking or melting, I'll assume it's going where it should --> the battery).
A nice lady told me that last week, but I don't think she was talking about a Toshiba...
Errr, what?...

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
2.875V.
The constant on battery LED means it's charging (the blinking it was doing earlier means "low"), so it's plugged in for now. If it changes (or the 4-5 hours it's supposed to take for a full charge passes with no change), I'll measure it, but if it's on external power the battery state shouldn't be affecting it?
Yes. I do not know if the fix was applied (I'll ask next I see the owner), but there's no sign of any melting or...

Discovered the service manual for this thing online here: http://ebookbrowsee.net/portege-t130d-satellite-t130d-pro-t130d-pdf-d480569509 (despite Toshiba's best efforts at knowledge prevention, detailed here: http://doncharisma.org/2013/11/06/toshiba-censorship-they-dont-want-me-to-repair-my-own-laptops/ ).

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
No LED on the charger. All the LEDs I've mentioned are on the front of the laptop, below the touchpad buttons.
edit: the LED under the power button mirrors the behaviour of the power LED at the front....Last edited by Scinik; 06-13-2014, 01:28 PM.

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
The brick (label says 19V, 3.42A, model #PA-1650-22) is putting out 19.44V (no load). The connection "looseness" I mentioned above is purely physical (the socket rattles around in the case, endemic to these according to what I've read online), the electrical connection is good.
Found the bag o' screws (I was sure I'd tossed it in the box with the rest of the bits: I had, only for it to find it's way down into a crevice where I didn't see it the first three times I looked in there :P ).

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Can't find any issues with the hard drive, and even with a magnifier the boards show no cracks, scorches, burned components, etc.
The power cable input (from the brick) is pretty loose, but if power wasn
t getting in, LEDs wouldn't come on at all.
I'm stumped right now.

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Hard drive is responding fine in my main machine.
Next step: re-assembly to check if it was just a loosened connection somewhere, or is there something else I should look at first?
Going over boards with magnifier in the meantime, but nothing obvious.

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Found that site just now, VERY useful!! Haven't even broken anything (yet).
Battery registers 2.875V, is that good? No spares in that size to swap for testing.
Harddrive will get put in main PC for checking (but that'll be after dinner). I'll let you know.
Aside from those, all looks fine (and surprisingly clean) inside (Bluetooth module isn't there, I'll ask owner about that). Anything else I can check easily?...

Re: The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
I'd rather do whatever I can before opening the case, but those are on list for if/when I do.
No signs of life at all, aside from power LED coming on briefly then going out, and a flicker of backlight every 2-3 attempts.
And thanks to admin who moved this thread to the appropriate place....

The "Help Scinik Revive a Toshiba Laptop" Thread
Hi all.
I'm trying to revive a non-responsive Toshiba Satellite T130D (model PST3LC-009006).
History: Screen stopped responding for the owner (<--- not me). He took it to a local service place (was still under warranty) after hooking it up to an external monitor to retrieve critical data. They got it working, but as he was walking out, the strap on the bag he had it in let go, sending bag and contents to the deck (so much for any further warranty claims :P). Hasn't booted since. No external signs of damage.
Symptoms: Battery's dead (been sitting...

Re: Crud between layers in LCD panel
Wouldn't a wrist strap deal with that?
Anyways, thanks for the answers, but I've kind of solved the problem (well, got the amount of crap in there down to a level I can [s]tolerate[/s] stop being tempted to possibly make it worse) by an embarrassingly low-tech method:
I tapped on the glass (using knuckle and fingernail) hard enough that they fell down out of view.
So if you guys want to file that into the old bag o' tricks......

Crud between layers in LCD panel
Hi, all.
Just repaired my Acer Ferrari F20 monitor (bad caps on inverter card) thanks in part to info gleaned from this site, so TYVM for that.
But, during the repair process, a couple of tiny pieces of crud (just big enough to be irritating) have somehow made their way down in between the layers in the panel itself. It is not a case of bad pixels (looking from different angles, you can see that the crud is actually in front of the backlight, but behind the LCD layer, and...
