• Re: Replace PicoFuse with 20mm quickblow

I don't have an ESR or a Ring tester.
No sign of any damage or scorch marks on any components!
I'll have another good look this weekend.
I have found that scanning things like this sometimes produces better pictures than a camera!
I'll get some picofuses bought, thanks Bob....

If I did that, the component at fault would be the one that was burning - EASY!

Meanwhile, back on earth . . . . . I pigtailed a 1.6a fuse in place of the pico, pluged in, switched on, got a quick flash of backlights before the fuse blew again.

Where do I go from Here?
All I've fixed so far is 3 monitors with BadCaps, all with the help and inspiration from you guys!

Cheers Bill, that opens up a few options for me.
a pack of 10 maplins fuses and a bit of soldering will get me away!

Of course, I'll probably have to find out why it blew in the first place!...

• Replace PicoFuse with 20mm quickblow

I can't locate a 240v 2a PicoFuse locally, can I replace it safely with a Maplins 20mm fuse holder and a glass 2a quickblow fuse?

Why are PicoFuses used in the firt place?
are they special, or just cheap?

• Old HP 1720 LCD, no backlight

I have aqquired an old HP1720 LCD monitor, with no backlight.
It's this one: HP1720 LINK

• Proview CY765 Slow start-up

Well, all hyped-up from my first monitor fix (HP1702) I bid for a broken Proview CY765 on Ebay,
and won it for the sum of 1 english pence! (and I collected it as it was local).
It apparently had a black screen which you could just see the image using a torch/flashlight.

Caps, I thought, me and Badcaps.net can fix that!

Imagine my dissapointment when I plugged it all in and everything worked perfectly!

Well it did the first time I switched it on.
Every time I switch it on from cold, it takes between...

I now declare this monitor FIXED!
running faultlessly.
Still not sure why it got better and better, unless it was the 'self repairing' caps thing!
Thanks for all your help guys!
I've been inspired now, I have two more monitors to attempt repair now,
Time for a new thread I think . . . . .Re: HP L1702 goes on and off

Thats very interesting.

Could it be that the new Caps I fitted have been lying on the shelf for a long time, and are now 'Waking Up' ?

The person I got it from claimed it worked fine, but he hadn't used it for a while.

It does seem to keep going for longer and longer between blackouts....

This may seem strange, but it seems to be getting better by itself!
I've seen it working fine for over an hour now, no flickering, no problems at all.
It still looses the backlights, but the time period before this happens is massively improved.
. . . and I haven't done anything to it lately!

It seems to be Ok for two or three seconds, then off go the lights, no flickering or noise.

Occasionally it stays on for a minute or two, gently flickering, then goes off, still no noise.

Well, here I am back to square one!
3a pico fuse is fine, checked soldered connections on the board and re-flowed quite a few.
Plugged it all in and . . . . . . There is LIGHT!, and windows, and my desktop, then, flicker and gone again!
Back lights come on for between 2 and 30 seconds, gently flickering all the time then go off again.
Right back to where I started.

ps. the only cap i DIDN'T change was the big boy!

the screen just stayed on for about two minutes this time.

Big thanks for all this advice!
I'll check the old caps tonight, non of them showed any sign if distress, but I changed them all anyway.

Where can we buy small quantity good quality caps in the UK?
Maplins is my only source (but it's turned into a toy shop these days!)

. . . and for future search purposes, the inverter board is a PTB-1569 dated 10/21/'04
and number 6832156900-01

• Re: HP L1702 goes on and off

Thanks Bobdee,
I'll get my Lidl magnifying glass and Aldi soldering iron out this weekend.

There's nothing under any of the white globs, I removed it all after I took the photo's.

I seem to have made this worse by changing the caps!
At least I got 2 seconds of flickering image before!

Is it usual to have so many different boards in one model of monitor?
I've seen pictures of 3 different versions of the power/inverter in an HP L1702 so far!

Thanks for the quick response Guys!

I did wonder what that component was, it has a 'J801' number. (Jumper?)
I'll check it tonight.
If it has blown, can I replace it with another type of 'off board' fuse, as I don't know where I'd find one of those?

The new Caps came from here:
Caps LINK
I'm afraid I don't know what ESR means!

Please be aware that I'm just handy at soldering and replacing things....

The main fuse just below the power cable is Ok. I can't see another fuse anywhere on either board!

I have a 2005 L1702 with the same problems, but it seems to have a different inverter board to all your photo's.
It was flickering on for a few seconds, then losing the backlight.
Green light is on, and the image can be seen shining a bright light on the screen.
I changed all 13 caps, and now I don't even get the initial flickering!
Image is still visable, so just no backlights at all now.

What do I do next?
