• Re: Dell 2709WB 2709W Monitor not powering on.

Take a look at this thread:

Sorry have not been on here for a while. I don't have any easy way to read the contents of the chip. Perhaps I could de-solder and post it to you?

Interesting. I too can get my one to come on by flicking the switch at the wall on and off quickly a few times.

I'm quite sure it is a problem with the FLi30336, either the chip itself or the soldering on the BGA package....

I had a look at that programmer. Looks to be very good value. There are some on eBay for about USD$50.

I'm thinking now that I might just get a re-furbished 2709W from this eBay seller:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=321368104396

Also I might try re-flowing the BGA chip. Funny, I have been in electronics for 25 years and I've yet to buy a hot air soldering tool.Re: Dell 2709w No power<br /> <br /...oks to be very...

Not really. Nothing on hand but I guess I could program a micro controller(AVR) to read it and and send the data to a PC over serial.

What would you use to read it?

For the re-flow did you remove the chip, clean up the pads and re-ball the chip or did you heat it up without removing it?...

I was looking into reflowing that chip also, you are brave!

You can buy the FLi30336 in single quantities from Aliexpress.

One more thing you could try:

    1. Cut the orange wire that goes from the PSU to the main board. cut it in the middle and strip back some insulation.
    2. Plug the monitor in to the wall outlet and wait a few seconds.
    3. Now join the orange wire.

This is not the same as ground the low side of R279....

So your monitor has 3.2V present and you cannot get the CPU to initialize by taking the low side of R279 to ground. It is even worse than my one.

I think that both of our monitors are beyond repair. I don't like to give up but there is not much you can do with a 416 pin BGA chip.

The 12V and one of the 5V rails ONLY come on when the monitor is powered on. The fact that you have no I2C activity means that the monitor is not in the powered on state.

I was hoping that the grounding of that point passed R279 would wake up your monitor.

For me also it is only the BGA chip that gets warm. The other chip with a heat sink is only enabled when the monitor is powered on, the 27MHz crystal beside does not oscillate until the 24V and second 5V rails are enabled.

Is the 19.6608MHz crystal near the BGA chip...

Interesting. So you have a similar problem to mine. No I2C activity suggests that the main CPU has not initialized.

I am very interested to know if your monitor will initialize by manually resetting it. See post #12. Can you earth the junction between R279 and R460? You can just use your multimeter on current with one probe on earth and briefly touch the junction with the other probe. Safest way is to use a resistor to earth just in case you accidentally earth the wrong side of R279 and short out the +24V.

Also I hope it is not...

Can you get an oscilloscope onto the I2C lines for the keyboard? See last photo in post #4, it shows the SDA and SCL lines. Is there activity on these lines? Failing that a DC Voltage reading from a DMM....

What you describe sounds like the backlight is not working. With the monitor face down you can see some glow from the backlight, especially in a darkened room. Does your backlight work?

Do the proximity buttons respond to touch?

I have not heard of replacing the memory chip, not sure why this would help.

Thank you for the offer of help.

So does the power LED come on briefly, or does it stay on? If it does stay on, is it blue or amber colored?

Does your computer recognize the monitor? Can you go into your display settings and see the monitor connected?

If only it were that simple! I do not see a reset chip anywhere.

    Sure is a strange fault....

Firstly thanks for the replies and suggestions guys. I work with micro controllers all the time so I'm familiar with reset circuits. Can't say I've ever came across a faulty one before, well accept when I've messed up the design of one!

But it would seem that this monitor is indeed having a problem with reset.

I have traced what could be a reset circuit, it involves R279 a 47K resistor and R460 a 7.5K resistor. These two form a Voltage divider. What is helpful is that the scaled Voltage is 3.15V. So to trace it I just need to probe...

The micro is the all-in-one FLI30366, with 416 pins in a PBGA format. I can only find a summary datasheet, not a pinout. Seems to be an obsolete chip, first made by Genesis who were acquired by ST.

Thanks for that, I feel you might be right about where to start looking.

Unfortunately it is a BGA package and a multilayer board. There does not appear to be a separate reset chip, so I see if I can find a reset pull-up resistor that could the the rest line....

Still battling this monitor. I have started drawing up my own schematics. I'm beginning to think this monitor is not repairable. Anyway here are some photos:

This is the layout with the back off. The power supply module makes just one Voltage, +24V. When the power is on the mainboard sends a signal to the power supply however no extra outputs are enabled and the output Voltage does not change. I suspect the signal is there to get the power supply into a high power mode.

  • Dell 2709W DC O.K. but no go.

Since I cannot start a thread yet I figured I would tell my story here:

So I have this Dell 2709W. The power supply is on a separate board and produces 24VDC. When plugged it in at the wall the power supply makes 24VDC O.K. On the logic board the 24V s converted into 5V and 3.2V(plus and additional +5V and +12.4V when on). The 3.2V is further converted to 1.8V. All these supplies are O.K.

If I connect up an external 24VDC power in place of the power supply board the behavior is the same, the supplies are there but the monitor...

    Hi there.

I have one of these in pieces and have studied it in great detail.

The power supply makes just one Voltage which is 24V.

If you have this Voltage present at the connector CN701 then I think the problem will be with the logic board.

I know it's been a while since your post so are you still interesting in getting this monitor going?

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hello people,

This looks like a great resource. I'm currently fighting a Dell 2709W monitor that is very stubborn. I can actually trick it into working but it requires the use of external power supplies. Hopefully with the help of this forum I can kick it bakc into life and maybe impart some of my own knowledge.
