• Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

This week: OK, I like how someone thinks here ....

Hop on the bike and 3 doors down guy is tossing 2 computers on the curb. Scored an old HTPC w/athlon 64, a zalman cooler, 2 gigs of crap ram and a 250 HDD w/ a busted SATA connector (superglue) and an Antec 350W PSU. Works fine. No data. But wait.

Also a full tower:
Coolermaster Haf 932 advanced (really nice), missing one wheel
Phenom II X4 965 (w/stock fan, but copper heat pipes)
Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 (top of the line back then, USB 3.0 & Crossfire),...

Here's what that one cap looks like, as well as the unit.

• Corsair 400W PSU w/one bad cap

I've got a 400W Corsair that works fine. But upon blowing out bunnies I see one bad cap, bulged a bit, and I was thinking if I replace it I may save other caps and the unit itself.

It's had a lot of use, maybe 6 years and been 'on the shelf' for 1.5 years now. All measurements are w/in spec.

Think it's worth replacing the one cap or just use it again until it fails? As I understand it modern mobos have built in protection from bad PSU's.

Read thru a third of 500 hits on a search and nothing quite like my situation so far. What do you think?

• Re: I'm off Windows XP (and Server 2003) forever...

Couple of thoughts,
1. no one seems to recognize you could run Sandboxie on an old OS. I'm still trying to research what browsers attempted to code the feature into recent versions.
2. as far as MS having nothing to gain I can only think REALLY???????
3. I've read, and I believe, that as soon as the latest iteration comes out MS pushes crap in their updates to gunk up the OS behind. I know of updates messing with Office applications and am surprised more people don't bring up the subject. In comments or artic...

• Pavilion lcd ribbon fit a different pavilion?

Trying to find out if an lcd 'ribbon' on an HP pavilion 15-f010dx will work w/the lcd on a pavilion dv7-1245dx. I got some drone at hp to tell me the respective part numbers are different. I could've guessed that.

Anyone know if I can connect anything else, like the screen on the dv7, to my i3 15-f010dx? I've also tried pressing Fn + F2 keys to get the laptop to boot to external but no go...

• Re: New power board but still 2 sec before black

@budm: Yes or course. I'm leaning towards keeping this power board and trying the t-shooting. Doubled my investment so figure in for a penny in for a pound. Just wish I had some clue as to whether it's the 'inverter' (cap?) on the board or the CCFLs.

@Agent24: Thanks. Yeah if I come out ahead the learning skills will be worthwhile as well.

Thank you.

• Re: New power board but still 2 sec before black

Hey I actually think I can see 'the image' but still unsure if the power board is worth keeping. I'll t-shoot using the 2 sec to black page I found but would love to hear from others who a) found it was the 'inverter' on the power board or b) fixed backlight on a similar display due to this symptom.

Thanks again for any interest : |

• New power board but still 2 sec before black

I've read numerous posts with similar problems and hope I can get a handle on what's ailing my Westinghouse LCM-22W3. Eventually only show: green led and desktop for ~2 sec, then black/nothing. Reboot would give same. After a few min led switches to orange.

I've fixed an lcd before (thanks badcaps). Replaced some caps on power board but got messy, so ordered a compatible DAC-19M005 replacement for my DAC-19M010.

With new power board: now upon boot I get (green led) & ~2 sec of desktop, then black (using VGA, or dongle: no true DVI cable). I can tell using a flashlight...

• Where else can I get cap kits?

After finding badcaps a while back, I repaired a doaner and was pleased with learning a new skill, however minor. However, my 22" recently crapped out on me so I researched vendors.

Corporate Computer as he calls himself, at www.ccl-la.com apparently has a kit for my model but they're either out of business or refuse to answer emails, the only form of contact listed.

Can anyone recommend a good site or two that sells caps and fuses and such for my lcd power board? I'm really at a loss. It's a long trip to the only place in town that sells caps and...

• Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Most perplexing. Post introduction here but then no Start button.
I guess this is the only way to post anything to this thread. Very odd.

Maybe someone should make the process a little more reasonable to traverse. Do I think posting my introduction here is what is being asked? No, I imagine it's elsewhere but I'll continue to type as I see no alternative.

Why do intelligent people muck up a simple process? Only solution is the 'post reply' button or this box. Oh well.
