• Re: Replacements for ceramic "cement" resistors on crossover?

Ok thanks guys. Is it common for there to be misprinted values on boards like that?

Ok... here's a pic of the bottom of the board.

Now heres the weird thing... these pics are from one of the other speakers (not the one I looked at). In one picture you can see there's a 10 Watt 20 ohm resistor. In the other if you look close you can tell the other missing resistor is the 10W 75 ohm resistor. (it's blurry as hell).

Is it possible the 100W is a misprint on the board? I never actually saw the 100W resistor as he lost...

Ok, I could be wrong about that. At the time I was more focused on trying to find the exact type of resistor, appearance-wise, than other details so I was kind of skimming over what I was reading. What you're saying makes sense though, if the resistors go to the tweeters (these things have 4 or 5 tweeters, a horn, and two woofers) it doesn't make sense to use something that would block the high frequencies.

Just in case, I'll go by his house after work Tuesday and get pics of...

Yeah those types are all I could come up with as well. I could be wrong, but at some point in my research I thought I read that those were in fact inductive. (the originals I mean).

If I'm right and the originals are inductive, using non-inductive resistors would cause no problems if I'm understanding the text you posted correct?...

I can't at the moment. I do have pictures from the side (from before we pulled the x-over out) that show there's nothing mounted on the backside, so I don't think mounting anything parallel would be an issue, but the speakers are at my friends house so I wouldn't be able to get any more pics till after work on Tuesday. (Son has piano lessons after work on Mondays.)...

I'm not sure how they are connected as far as where they are in the circuit if that's what you mean. I have included a picture to show where they mount on the board below. As far as the actual resistors they look like this http://i04.c.aliimg.com/img/ibank/2013/707/071/930170707_797191961.220x220.jpg

The closest replacement I have found that's not on alibaba or aliexpress (I don't...

  • Replacements for ceramic "cement" resistors on crossover?

I'm trying to help a friend replace the cement resistors in his Gemini GSM-3200 but I'm having a hard time finding replacements.

    The values are:

    100 Watt 20 Ohm 5% (100W20Rj)
    10 Watt 75 Ohm 5% (10W20RJ)

I think I might have found a replacement for the 10W on parts express, but wont know for sure until I can get the lead spacing measurements from the crossover. The other one I'm having an even harder time. I did find one cement resistor, but it has the wrong type of leads (sort of like a double lead sticking out the bottom on each end rather...

  • Success!

I replaced the 29 Electrolytic caps left in the turntable and it works perfectly now! Thanks for all the advice. This forum and Audiokarma are by far the 2 best forums I've ever been a part of.

  • Re: Capacitor brand identification?

Thanks guys, I ordered the last 2 caps earlier today, just waiting for everything to come in so I can get started. I'll post the results when I'm done if anyone's interested.

I can't find anyone online that has this cap in stock: ESMG100ELL470ME11D. Can anyone tell me another brand/series that would be close to it's specs? I was able to get all the other caps (from 3 different sites), but no one seems to have this one.

It's a 10v 47uf cap, The ripple current for this is 100 according to the data sheet, but I can't seem to find anything about the ESR for it.

    **Edit**
I went over the data sheet again and noticed that some other series of caps do list an ESR. Could it be that on some applications...

Thanks, for the adivce on the 3.3/50 caps.

As for the 25V 2200uf cap, I'm fine with the replacement since it should work. I just don't understand why sony would install a 25v cap, and then put 32V in the service manual. As I said, I have two of these turntables and they both have the same caps installed....

  • Re: Capacitor brand identification?

I'm just now getting around to (about to) ordering the caps for this thing, but I just ran into a bit of a snag, and something else a little weird...

The snag: There is one SL series cap that is 25V 3.3 uf, there is no replacement SMG series cap with that value, the lowest available cap is 4.7 uf in 25V. The next higher one available in 3.3uf is 50v but I have no way (so far) of knowing what the other values would be (ripple current, esr, etc...) I just looked and at 10uf there is a difference of 7 on ripple current between 25V and...

Yeah, I've really been leaning towards that, especially after seeing a guy with another similar model fixing his by replacing all the caps.

As you, and others frequently mention here... at this age those caps are going to be out of spec anyway, so I might as well replace the caps. If that doesn't fix it, at least it's that much more solder practice to get me closer to being comfortable with soldering the tonearm wires.

I was going to ask for tips on locating the leads on the bottom of that main board...

Yeah, I already have all the service manuals etc... available from vinylengine.com.

As I stated before... in order to get to the stuff I have to take the tonearm out... and I think I need more practice before I attempt those tiny little tonearm wires.

The other problem with those manuals is that it states that the TT is "pre-lubed at the factory for the life of the turntable". So I'm not even sure what lubrication would be appropriate yet. The Dual turntable manual lists 4 or 5 different...

It's a Sony Brush less slot less motor, pretty big, that bolts up from the bottom of the turntable. The tip of the motor's shaft is the spindle your place the hole of the record on.

I see where I may have been wrong about the lubrication though... I'm looking at the service manual for a Dual TT that I might buy to try to fix (only $20, so not a big risk) and It's got to be the best service manual I've ever looked at, lots of pictures and explanations... Anyway, one of the pictures shows the cam that moves the tonearm,...

I've cleaned it as much as I can, including taking the motor apart and cleaning it out and adding a little oil. I just added a little 3 in 1 oil as that was all I had lying around... but that had no impact.

If I understand the operation of the TT correctly, I'm not sure lubing of the "linkages", or whatever you'd call them, inside the TT would affect the motor spinning up. Even if I select manual operation, which I think would rule out the tonearm auto mechanism needing lubed, it still does it.

Yeah, it's nice that these were pretty easy to identify, and that the company is still in business. I managed to stumble across the chart you're talking about while asking for help with this and got the recommended replacements. Which, by the way, were quite a bit smaller than the original caps... Especially the smaller of the two. When I 1st opened up the package I thought I'd somehow used the wrong part numbers (even though I double and triple checked before ordering).

I see now that I can just ignore the CEO4W markings......

Yeah, after checking the other turntable, I was sure they weren't newer caps. The turntable I believe was sold in the 70s if I remember right.

Just out of curiosity, what about CEO4W makes you think radial leads and 85c? I only ask because there's no R and no 85, and I wonder if that could help me in future identification....

It's a Sony PS-4300. I've de-ox'd all the controls already. The music seems to play fine once it's spinning, but from time to time you have to give it a little push to get it to spin up. some times it does it fine on it's own.

Although, now I can't remember 100% if I de-ox'd the two speed control adjusters underneath the platter or not, but I know I did everything else I could find, and I'm fairly certain I did the two adjusters under the platter....
