• Re: Iwill DVD266u-RN Stability Fixes [UPDATED]

Any clues on what may have happened here guys. I had my dvd266-r in hibernation when I shut off the comp from the main power outlet. After that, it never came back up. Anyone know what to do? I'm pretty sure its a corrupted bios chip, but the reason why it happened is less important then how to get it back up and working. Would anyone have a bios chip from a dead dvd266-r that they would have? It's been out of service for a couple of months now, and I'm getting tired of using a 466 celeron. If anyone can help, please let me know....

  • Never mind guys, I think it was because I was running the super pi from the same directory, so I copied it to another and ran both like that, and everythings running good, no crashes. Just one more question, I know the temps on this board are horribly off, but would Motherboard Monitor give any reliable temps at all, or are those off as well?

    Thanks

  • Well, this threads been dead for a while, but maybe someone will still have some info to pass along. I recently purchased a IWILL DVD266-r from these forums and am also experiencing stability problems. I'm using an old voodoo, so I don't have any of the AIW problems, but when trying to put a full load on the cpus, running 2 super pi's, one of the super pi's crashes within seconds. Power supply is not a problem, I'm feeding the board from a Tagan 480. I haven't replaced the north bridge yet, because I would like to flash the bios before I go ahead with that. When I do try to flash bios, I get a...

  • I'm also having trouble cleaning out the center of the holes from the solder. I bought the desoldering tool from Radio Shack, and it works great, as long as the cap is still in place. But the center of the hole is just stuborn. I don't even think its clean solder anymore, that its probably picked up a bit of filth from time after time of trying to melt it away. The recommendation that the leads be cut to close to appropriate size during installation, I'll try and do that. I just don't want to waste a cap destroying it in the process of putting it in. Any other recommendations for removing that...

A favorite of mine is Super PI:

Select 32million, and come back after lunch. Prime95 is also a good choice, but it has a habit of being over sensitive and crashing when their seems to be no stability problems, or the opposite, it'll run even on an unstable comp.

  • So when people say they need 8mm or 10mm replacement, they are talking about the lead spacing then?

  • Is it the cylinder we measure, or the "legs" of the cap? Sorry, whats the proper term for the "legs"?

  • Is this what I would need for 4700uF Rubycon caps?:

  • If I was to recap this area, what would be the best cap values to replace them with?

    Thanks topcat for the hosting

I think I'll be making a cap purchase from you soon TopCat, just want to feel more comfortable with what shall be done and replaced with. The first post, the modder added to the other side of the board, the 6.3v/3300uf with 16/4700uf and the 16v/1500uf with 16v/2200uf. Are these acceptable values for me to replace the current caps with?

Also, Im going to need a decent soldering iron do this job. Will this one be ok: http://mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce/mcm/en_US/support/catalog/productDetail.jsp?id=21-3475...

  • To the left of the northbridge, their are 6 large mosfets, 3 to the top, 3 on the bottom. The way it works, is it a capacitor to each mosfet? or do three of the caps ontop of the choke coils have nothing to do with the mosfets? I know its difficult to look at this without any graph or board infront of you, but from general board layout design, what do you guys thing?

The ones on the top are 6.3v 3300uf, on the bottom, 16v 1500uf. If it is true that all 6 are to serve the same purpose, any reaason why they are of different values, or just to save a few bucks?

    ps....

  • Recapping for increased stability

    Hello, first post

I currently run a DFI Infinity board that is chugging along nicely. What I am wondering, for overclocking reasons, what would be the best way to mod the board in order to reach greater stability at higher speeds.

Here is a picture of the board:

This board is notorious for cold boot problems, straight out of the box. It most likely is a bios problem though, but in the attempt for a better overclock, I may find the cure for a problem also hopefully.

Ignore the different colored pcb of the board. The Infinity...
