    My friend and I were at his house once, with his laptop, using his wireless network. We were trying some fancy device bridging between wi-fi and wired devices, and it wasn't working. (He is notorious for things that should work not working.) So, we went about disabling this and re-installing that for about an hour, getting increasingly frustrated, when he has the realization that he can't remember if the password ends with a ! or a 1. He changed it, and it instantly worked. We laughed about that one for a while...

    Thanks for all of your responses. He's going to try the online RMA path first, and if he has problems there then he'll start calling and writing. Pictures are attached, as promised.



    That made my day (although Shroomie's Oprah crack helped ). What's interesting is that [URL=http://www.seagate.com/support/service/warranty.html]Seagate's warranty terms page[/URL] clearly defines what damage counts and what doesn't, and (among many other things) spontaneous combustion isn't on that list.

    Just wondering if anyone has any tips for my friend...I know some here have had to fight manufacturers on other issues before, and this seems pretty dangerous to me. It also scares me, because I have one of these drives in my computer.

    Anyways, on with the story...

    My friend was having some intermittent bootup issues. At random, his BIOS would forget one or several of his four IDE drives, all of which worked perfectly fine with his old motherboard.
