    Zenith plasma p42w34 front light powers on but no pic

    Hello everyone,

    name is hector. I am new to bad caps and have done two succuessful repair on my privious monitors. So heres the deal i have a zenith p42 w34 plasma that i got for free on cl . So i figured what the heck. When you turn it on the front led powers on and then you hear this noise from the part that i took a pic of. I dont know what its called. I also took pics of some caps to see if these looked blown or if it is glue on them the substance felt rubbery so im not sure. Then in one pic there is white on a cap and on the other thing as well. Any how here are some pics of the whole back and then three of the ones where the noise is comming from.

    Pic two and three are of the noisy piece pic two is the lower part and pic three is the upper part. Pic one is the whole thing. The noisy part is on the right side of pic one.

    It's the Z-sus. Google the part number.

      do you know if there is anyway to fix it at home myself or is it easier to just buy the part? What is the problem in this part that made it go bad? Thank you for your help.

        Also do you know if this could be found in an older tv?

          I would need PlainBill to verify this but, someone told me that if the Z-Sus is bad, normally a picture is visible but very dim.
          I don't know if this is true for all kinds of Z-sus failures or not.

            What part of "Google the part number." don't you understand?

            With a little research you can find the likely cause of the failure (the hybrid), the models of TV this Z-Sus was used in, and maybe even a source for both the hybrid and the card itself.

            I have no way of knowing if you can fix it at home. I have not seen anything that would lead me to believe you have the skills or the tools necessary to repair it. It is NOT an easy repair.

            I am also contemplating the possible consequences of your dealing with 200 volts.

              Thanks for your concern youre right I dont know very much other then the basics of looking for bad caps and checking all fuses. Like I said I am a newbie. As for equipment I only have a multimeter and a soldering iron. I have however fix two items thanks to you guys and feel that I can be capable with the right info maybe do it myself. I did look up the model number it ranges in price from 60 135 U.S dollars. DO you think this part would be an older tv?

                        Well, you are at least $60 into this thing already. You might as well go for it.

                        Plainbill mentioned a hybrid card. Maybe you should post a pic of it as well.

                        I'm just a "Junior Advisor" trying to make sense of it all. I'm glad you got this for free on CL however always be aware of how much you can get this thing new vs fixing. I usually dont spend (cost of TV or monitor and parts to fix) no more than 15 - 20% of the retail comparable. A set like that may only cost about $600 or less. You're already into 10% of it's worth NEW without a solution!

                        If you are doing this for a hobby, by all means, take your time.

                          I appreciate the relpy I was ready to give up. I am a newbie so this will probably take me a while to figure out. This is a new hobbie I would like to get into. I would like to know where this hybrid card would be found on my tv. I really dont want to be a bother by asking to many questions that might seem dumb to you guys, but I gotta learn somehow...right

                              'Hybrid', not 'hybrid card'.

                              In this context, look at the Y-Sus and Z-Sus cards. Each of them has a large heat sink perhaps 3" x 6". If you look at the bottom side of the card you will see two rows of pins in that area. Each row is perhaps 2" long, and the rows are 2" apart. If you look between the heat sink and the card you will see something looking vaguely like a very large DIP IC. That is the hybrid. They are notorious for failing.

                              Replacing is is NOT a trivial task. The replacement hybrid costs about $40, and it is very easy to damage the board while trying to remove the old hybrid.

                              Samsung used a similar design on some of their sustain cards, but their design allowed removing the heat sink, which meant the pins of the old hybrid could be cut and extracted one at a time.

                                  Is this the piece that need replace? If so is there anything i can do to replace certain part in it. I know that when i did the hp pavillon monitor one of tiny fuses(i think thats what its called was not reading .3 ohms i replaced it and then it worked. I did the fuses in this hybrid deal and some did not read .3 ohms should i replace them.

                                      The label next to each component identifies the type of component.

                                      C = Capacitor

                                      D = Diode

                                      R = Resistor

                                      D22 looks suspicious. Is that something dabbed on the top, or is it burnt?

                                        its just dabbed with the coating of rubber cement stuff there are others that look like that on the board. Are the resistor the one that measure .3 ohms? if so not all are doing that some read 10.4
