    Sony Bravia KDL-42V4100 Problems

I have a Sony Bravia curb find with the following picture:

    Network TV with an antenna:

    DVD with HDMI:

    Typical Menu:

    The internal TV Guide:

With just the first two pictures, I would have suspected the T-Con being bad. However, don't the menus and display stuff also go thru the T-Con? Wouldn't that rule out the T-Con?

Another thing that I notice, is that it scans around 20 digital channels, but I can only get four (23,1. 23.2, 23.3, 23.4) to display (I don't have a proper remote, so I am not sure exactly how to get them to display). I am using a simple rudimentry antenna, so the signal level might be low, but normally, if a TV will scan a channel, it will display it. The TV is a pre-2009 switchover model, but it has both analog and digital tuners.

I would try a couple of the other input types to see if any of the main board inputs work. Also what resolution were you "pumping" in.... of course, probably no control of OTA but on the dvd, you can force a given resolution beside "auto".

As for the inputs, I tried most of the HDMI and also the composite video inputs. They were all basically the same.

It looks to be main board problem with video processing. What happen if you try cooling or heating the main board?

          The preview picture looks bad.
Should try other video sources too.

Yes, the preview in the window is bad. I just assumed that the preview was just a video overlay.

you can put JPG format Photos on USB and display them. and you can compare it when you display MP4 film format from USB too at same USB Port and the same USB Pin on the TV.

                  Re: Sony Bravia KDL-42V4100 Problems

Doesn't look like T-Conn problem to me.

Menu and Guide overlay go through T-conn as well and look crystal clear.

If it was only the antenna input then I would suspect poor grounding or broken solder connections to grounds in the antenna module.

However, the problem is more widespread so I suspect bad surface mount capacitors in video and input sections of mainboard.

There are a LOT of surface mount caps on this board and many have probably drifted out of spec with low capacitance or high ESR. I would definitely suspect the 100uF/16V ones and possibly 220uF/16V.

Try applying heat to certain capacitors while TV is on to help narrow your search.

All capacitors should be checked, and replace faulty ones.

with USB test i suggested we will know, if the issue with receiver signal or video signal processor.

to me i saw many sets display black screen or distribute picture but the menu and browser working. and those with USB test JPG it show but Video MP4 screen stay black or distribute issue and the fault was T-CON cant handle refresh frame rate freq. JPG XML HTML such menu too don't need Freq fresh rate.

This TV has a USB port, but it is only for servicing.

According to the manual, "This USB port is for service only unless you are connecting the optional BRAVIA external module (DMex)."
