Sharp LC-60E77UN: black screen and blinking power light.

I live in Florida and right now it is hurricane season and we have terrible lightning every day. During one of these storms this tv was knocked out and now the display won't turn on. An older couple gave this to me because they were getting a new one and this wasn't working. I assumed it wasn't truly bad and so have taken it in a done some research on the device and the error.

From reading the service manual section 6-14 it appears to be a ERR_PNL (40pin): L error. I have tried every way listed online and in the manual to display the 'K' screen and reset the lamp errors to see what is wrong. I have had no avail and so I took the back off to see what was under the hood. I will comment pictures in a response comment from my phone.

Has anyone had any luck in bypassing the lamp error check on boards like these? I read elsewhere that if you solder a bypass you can see if it is the power board or the leds. Will that work with this board?

Or have I misunderstood what the manual was saying?

This set uses CCFL's not led's, The backlight inverter boards are under the shields on the right and left of the tv
There are two boards on each side, check the plug connections between the two boards, sometimes the connections burn.

to enter the service menu, unplug the tv, while pressing VOL (-) and INPUT keys, plug in the tv. The `K' should appear, Next hold down the VOL (-) and CH (▼)

Thanks for the clarification about the leds and ccfls. The screen remains black when i plug it in while holding the Vol- and Input keys.

Should I look at the inverter board for something that triggers the fault?

You should look at those wire connectors between the two inverter boards, see post #3

They look normal. I unplugged them and plugged them back in without a problem.

So you removed the shields to expose the inverters? check the small white fuses, there should be two on each of the large inverter boards, if they are ok, check the resistance on each output transformer, the resitance should be close to the same on all of them. Ifone checks open or lower than the others it would likely be bad. You could also have a bad ccfl.

Try this: unplug tv, hold down [CH_DOWN] and [VOL_UP] and plug in tv, do the backlights come on?

Or this: with tv pluged in and turend off, hold down [VOL (-) and CH UP and press power button once, release vol(-) and CH_UP and press power once more.

R_J, thank you so much. I don't know what I have done, but this time the combination of Ch_DOWN and VOL_UP worked and the display is back up and running. What did that combination of keys do exactly?

I believe that is just a way to bypass the error and will only operate for a short time. If it does allow you to go into the service menu and reset the lamp error counter, check that all the lamps are working.
something else to check on these sets is to remove the inverter boards and check where the grounds meet the metal chassis, if there are black arc marks, clean them and reinstall the boards making sure the screws are fairly tight.

So it has been working for a day, but now it occasionally flickers brighter than the normal brightness. I plugged it into a different surge protector, which I read might affect it like such, but is there a way to check to see if it is the board or the surge protector?
