    storm power surge

I am picking up 2 vizio flatscreens from a friend's house tomorrow. Wants me to see if I can repair them. Said during a storm the power surged like 6 times in a row. It blew out a few light bulbs in the house and now both flat screens will not turn on. No response from the tv when hitting the power button.

What is the first thing you would check upon picking them up? I'm hoping its just a fuse on the power supply board.

Not a bad place to start especially if there's no standby.

If I had a storm kick ass like that I'd be ripping cords out left right and centre.

he had a surge protector trip and he reset it like a dummy. Told him surge protectors are only good for one spike, after that its just a glorified outlet multiplier lol

I think my plan is to check fuse, bridge rectifier, then move onto diodes.

I was going to mention that, did not want to totally ruin someone's day

I still have the dud HDMi set top box and dormant HDMI1 on my panny from lightning a few years ago.

No surge protector strip will protect the surge coming through HDMI port from the cable box.

10 years ago, on August 25, 2007, Springfield, Vermont, (USA) we had a T-storm that looked and sounded like this one:

long time ago we had a surge protector that had cable feed into it along with phone lines.

Did a google search and there are surge protectors for hdmi ports.

https://sewelldirect.com/bolt-hdmi-i...ower-surge-esa found this, however most search results were false advertisement, you click on them and it would show hdmi splitter or hdmi device that has nothing to do with surge suppression, that apc does not have hdmi suppression just phone and coax and ordinary plugs cat 5 etc.

Correct. I posted that to show what we used years ago. That was before hdmi came out.

That is an in-line HDMI surge protector, never seen one on the outlet strip yet. That one is up to 1080P. You are going to need one for each HDMI.
Best protection is to disconnect the devices during the thunder storm and just read the book or do something else till the storm is over.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

                        by PantherDave
                        Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

                        Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
                        by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
