I have a TV that was connected to a circuit without protection. For some reason the garage in my '62 split shares some outlets in the main living room and the upstairs. I thought I had put a surge protector on it, but it turns out that that it was replaced with a simple strip.
Error occurred when I was running a planer in the garage, hit some knotty wood and tripped the breaker.
when I flipped the breaker back on, the TV started with a black screen that slowly shifted to white and there was some vertical magenta/red banding that could best be described as what looks like a stereo equalizer, as it warmed up the right half of the screen went completely white. Sound and menu buttons worked fine.
I powered off for 10 min completely disconnected from wall, and after power cycling it went back to normal working picture. Since then its a crap shoot. Sometimes it works normally, sometimes the picture has the above described errors.
I have not removed the back cover for any debugging yet as I don't really have a good debugging plan.
The problem tends to be that the error condition only occurs when I have very little time to do any debugging early AM before work or late at night when I am ready for bed. A couple of power cycles or waiting with the main switch off for a few minutes most of the time brings it back.
One time when it was malfunctioning a good downward whack on the top of the panel instantly fixed the issue.
I have fairly good soldering station at work I could use and also I have access to a DVM and an Oscilliscope 100Khz and some good DC power sources if needed.
Looking for help with plan of attack:
1) check all DC voltages
2) check caps for bulges/leakage
3) Alternate connections of the TCON ribbon cables?
4)????
