    Choke coil buzz on plasma

    Hey guys,

    So I fixed this plasma, and everything is fine except for a high pitched buzz witch I have narrowed down I think to a Radial choke. (600v rated on the side) this is located on the main power board, is is more notable when the TV is in standby, is is sitting near the secondary power side.

    So my understanding of chokes and inductors in general is still sketchy but I have a few questions.

    1. is there anything else that could be causing the coil to vibrate? like a tiny capacitor that is playing up, mosfet dying ect?

    2. can i replace with another type of Coil like Toroidal ect. that may be less noisy and what effect can that have on the circuit?

    thanks.

    Re: Choke coil buzz on plasma

    It's pretty normal for plasma TVs to buzz gently in operation. This is due to the fact that the screen is rapidly pulsing about 600 times a second to produce the image on the screen.

    If you can hear the buzzing from a normal distance, once the case is on, then that is something worth investigating, otherwise, it's not really something you can fix.

      Hmm.... upon more investigating In stanby mode,

      if i disconnect the main logic board, it goes dead silent?
      the main board has a lot of SMD silver cap electro caps and some conductors.
      (and interestingly a SONY brand processor, this is a Samsung P50P91FD)

      So if we say that for some reason that something is using more power then it should on standby, perhaps a cap or something leaking to ground. could this cause slightly more draw then usual thus making the power supply create a slightly elevated PWM supply witch may be creating just the right conditions to create the resonance that we can hear?

      and another question, for the standby voltage, what generally are acceptable limits for the voltage with and without load? (assuming its safe to Run standby without load)

      cheers,

        Of course...no load, no noise. You're hearing coil whine, it's *completely* normal.

        (and interestingly a SONY brand processor, this is a Samsung P50P91FD)
        Sony makes silicon for lots of companies. Sharp makes the plasma subframe processor found in most LG sets. Samsung makes 50% of Apple's iPhone CPUs. Not uncommon. Depends on who has the IP/patents or the best engineers for that part of a system, Sony have the professional video market so a lot of expertise in area of video processing.

        So if we say that for some reason that something is using more power then it should on standby, perhaps a cap or something leaking to ground. could this cause slightly more draw then usual thus making the power supply create a slightly elevated PWM supply witch may be creating just the right conditions to create the resonance that we can hear?
        Very unlikely. Would have to draw a lot of current. Bad cap might cause buzzing due to instability on PSU output.

        and another question, for the standby voltage, what generally are acceptable limits for the voltage with and without load? (assuming its safe to Run standby without load)
        It's safe, generally Samsung use 5.2 or 5.3V outputs, anywhere from 4.8V to 5.5V will usually be okay.

          LG 60PN6500 Plasma with standby, but won't power up.
          by XCon
          Symptom is TV has standby, I get relay click, voltage rails come up, but no screen and TV shuts down after 5 seconds. If I disconnect the Z from the y sus, the unit stays powered up and I can read voltages.

          So I've read the two other threads on this TV and I can confirm the Y-Sus #EAX64789501 does not have diode or resister failure. Did not see any fractured solder joints on the transformer or anywhere else. All power boards have slight discoloration on the hot spots.

          The board in question is EAX64789601, Z board. I have 208 going to Y Sus, 5v standby. Pin 5 on P174 connector...

          Sony BVM1410PM (CRT Monitor) - Coil Choke Replacement
          by FZG
          Hello there, helpful forum people!

          I am in the process of fixing an old (ca. 1990) Sony BVM1410PM CRT monitor and need some help. The PSU board of this monitor had failed and I had to replace quite a few capacitors and other parts but now - with my limited knowledge - I ran into a wall.

          On the board there is a coil choke that has failed (tested with inductance meter) and I don´t know what to replace it with. According to the device´s service manual the part in question is a "Coil, Choke 525 uH (Sony P/N: 1-459-643-11)".

          The original part...

          Samsung 60" Plasma TV, Blinking Standby LED
          by rju
          A sports bar/restaurant with ~40 Samsung Plasma TVs. This is the 2nd TV that has a blinking standby LED. I'd like to learn how to repair these TVs because I'd guess that over time more and more of them will develop this symptom. My hope is to repair the bad PCB, however if that's not realistic then I'd replace the bad PCB.

          Model PN60F5300AF, Type PN60F5300, Model Code PN60F5300AFXZA

          Upon applying power, the red standby is steady. When I tap the power button, the standby LED immediately blinks twice, then it blinks once ~ every 4 secs. Also, Upon applying power, the...

          Samsung Plasma PS43F4500AW Won't Start (flashing standby)
          by check12
          Hi ... Samsung Plasma PS43F4500AW ... when powered with 240V mains standby flashes, pressing PWR button causes standby LED to go out but nothing further happens.

          I have already removed and benched the SMPS, jumpered PS_ON to GND, VS_ON to 5.3v and have VS & VA voltages and all other voltages available at CN4007.

          VS=213v
          VA=58v
          SVT_VS=213v

          This suggests to me that the SMPS is probably ok but I have no experience of TV repair so could do with some help.

          I have removed the XY-Drive board and checked all the ribbon cable...

          Zombie Samsung UN55NU6900F dead / no standby voltage - randomly came to life after hours of troubleshooting then died
          by tvguy12012012120
          This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.

          Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today....
